Dayum. That looks a lot more fun than where I'm supposed to run that same weekend. Maybe I need to switch!

Ya know, I'm going to look into it. Had a rough 2011 due to injury recovery and other things so I'm way out of shape right now, but I may be able to get ready for that.

The elevation would kick my ass, but I'm pretty sure I could get in under the 10 hour time limit. The scenery would make DFL or a DNF OK in my book. Much more fun than 4 hours on a bike trail in MN.

We start really training 4-6 months out for one of these events, so you should be ok as long as you're over your injury. In the "off season" it's just short 2-3 mile runs about 6 days a week to maintain a sort of base level fitness, that's what we are launching off now.

And, for reference, we aren't "racing". Too old and slow for that. Our 50k times have all been 9-10 hours on courses similar to the one in my link (i.e. lots of elevation gain and loss). We are nowhere near the genetic mutants out front who take half that time.

Nice!

We haven't made arrangements for travel, hotel, etc, yet. Probably won't for another month or two. I'll PM you and let you know our particulars and we can meet up there. May be the need for an after race celebratory ale, or three...

Have you done a marathon before?

We (wife, brother and I) are starting to get ready, but we have until May 12. Skowinski-wife and I train together, brother lives on the other side of the country. Our Sunday long runs are just now pushing 1 hour, in another month they will be 3-4 hours... For a 50k we usually get up to the low-20 mile range for a couple of runs 2-3 weeks out and then go do it.

I usually just go by time. If I can keep going for 7-8 hours then I can do a 50k.

This is our "tuneup" event, on May 12 one month out: (slackers haven't updated the website since last year)

Then, the monster on June 23, 4 days after my 55th birthday:

no, havent done a marathon. Im on a waiting list for one January 28th in Indianapolis. Its a singletrack run and it starts at 6.PM, yep night... headlights required. My long runs are in the 4hour plus range on hilly terrain, up down type of stuff. the 19.6 mile loop at the local state park has 3990 of elevation gain. ;) I don't have any motivation to do a 26.2 on the roads... Seems there is a 50k within 3 hours everyweekend though for trail runners. :)

Whic Race are you doing? I have been running for the last 2 months, and really love trails. Spent Sunday volunteering at the run for Regis 50k trail race, while my wife ran it. (tied for first female). There is a trail in the Cleveland area called the dirty run trail series that I am planning on doing. Have fun

Dammit, I need to move back home to PA! Or find more trail races in the midwest. And I totally understand the lack of desire to do 26.2 on the road. Since I've started running more trails, even on the limited ones I have here, I enjoy it a ton more than the roads.
