Great pics.... Shame that it is 1456 miles even to Calais....I would love to be riding in Nova Scotia about now......expected temp here in North Alabama today is 100 degrees farenheit ...actual..... heat index with humidity about 117 farenheit.

Really like the scenery up there ..... reminds me of many of the harbors I recall from the Maine coast.

Thanks for sharing

It's only a one hour drive and 3 hr boat ride from Calais to Digby, or about 5 hours drive from Calais to Amherst, not that far. I drive to my brother's house in Bath, Maine in 11 hrs. As for temp, we never see 100, even 90 is uncommon, normally a hot summer day is 27 C, which is about 86. I don't like the heat that much. Riding....what can I say, I try and find the route less taken and pass along the photos, I guess it looks like Maine, as Maine is very close by water, our benefit is that no one lives in Nova Scotia, so no traffic, no billboards, no snooty rich broads in Mercedes' etc.etc.

60 % of Nova Scotia roads are paved. A lot of the dirt Iride is not "road". It is logging roads and trails owned and maintained by large logging companies. Thanks for the compliment.......Fredgreen

Some Ride updates

It's been awhile since I updated what SWMBO and I have been up to. We did a two day ride through the New France, South Shore area of NS, I'll take care of that one first.

We took off late on Monday after Shirley finished work and took an uneventful ride to the beach at the foot of Long Tusket Lake and set up camp for the evening

evening on the beach

A flock of ducks heading to their night time roost

Two beavers came out for a swim in the lake....Not those kind of beavers....the hairy kind

Only one was photsgenic enough to come close enough for a close up

night falls on the lake

We awoke to the delicate sound of thunder at about 4 am, went back to sleep and got up at about 7 to more thunder, in fact it thundered and stormed all day on this side of the province,,,,the answer...go to the other side. We packed up camp and headed out.

Checking the route, so many logging roads are not mapped

Bordering on the edge of the Tobeatic Nature Preserve...there is a strict " no vehicle policy" in the preserve

Ominous forebeaing of what is in store for us later

We popped out of the woods near South Carrying Lake and headed towards North Kemptville in search of coffee

knarly old tree by the road

stealth KLR's

We made our way to the Kemptville corner store, not many of these stores left. The owner put on a pot of coffee and refused to accept any money for it.....if you find this store, please stop and buy something and thank them for their hospitality...

Shirley awaiting coffee to brew.

posted in the store

After coffee we headed across the Indian Fields Rd. towards Shelburne, boring slab....didn't stop until we were hungry, or maybe because we were hungry.

Stopped here for lunch

After lunch we could hear the thunder rumbling pretty heavy and decided to start heading for home...250 km away...might get wet.

Stopped by the Mersy River near Liverpool

The sky was looking pretty ugly for riding, but what can you do...we pressed on.

Shortly after this the sky opened up....too wet for pics, we spent an hour and a half on the slab getting soaked and watching the light show above us accompanied by lots of thunder. It took three days to dry out the riding gear. Still it was a good trip....Cheers

Vacation 2011

Shirley and I had decided that we would take the KLR's on vaction this year instead of the Cruisers. We picked the interior of Cape Breton, the Margaree Valley in particular as our destination, as we only had 5 days to work with. While Shirley worked on Saturday, I got the fun job of packing up the gear onto the bikes.

As soon as Shirley got home, we hit the road, As the sun was setting we were on the scout for a place to stealth camp for the night. We settled for a logging road near New Glasgow. It was too dark for pics, so we got some in the morning

Campsite

We headed for Timmy's for a coffee, it was looking like a good day ahead.

checking the map

New Glasgow scenery

Shortly after this Shirley waved me over to the roadside to tell me I seemed to be blowing some blue smoke.....not a good thing. The engine sounded OK, so I topped her up and we carried on to Port Hawkesbury for breakfast. As we drank our coffee I checked my oil......Down 1/2 quart in 120 km,,,hmmmm, not a good thing when you are going into the woods. About this time a 900 Vulcan pulled in and the rider and his wife got off and started a conversation.

Bill

and Jeannie

they were on a cruise from Toronto celebrating their 35th ann. We gave them some travel hints and invited them to stop by our house on their way, as they had to go by to catch the Ferry in Digby. As soon as I started my bike, I could hear the engine rattle a little. The decision was made to head for home if the old girl could make it. Disappointment set in, but it was better than blowing up in the Highlands of Cape Breton. We decided to take the secondary hiways home to avoid taxing the engine. It was very hot, so the first backroad river we passed meant swimming, well cooling off at least.

forum rules prevent Shirley's pics.......Sorry no skinny dipping pics.

We passed through numerous small towns

and ended up in Sherbrooke for the night.

Oh I wish I was in Sherbrooke now........

The Campground

and one from the Shadows

We picked up some firewood in a rickety old wagon and headed to out campsite

Shirley decided to buzz the campground sans ATGATT

Then get rid of what little she had left and go for a swim

Sorry again....forum rules

Pics from the campsite

The ladies facilities.

just kidding, there are new fangled flushy toilets on site......

In the morning we headed out, stopped at Webbers for a stretch.

Checking the oil again
