New VA traffic law on July 1, 2011

Traffic lights: Motorcycles, mo-peds and bicycles will be allowed to proceed through red lights so long as the rider comes to a complete stop for 120 seconds, treats the light as a stop sign and determines that it is safe to proceed.

I know a few lights where this will help

I know of a few lights too. Good to see this law on the books!

North carolina passed a similar law a year or two ago. Main difference I see is NC it is 3 minutes or 3 cycles of lights before proceeding.

I have used it a few times since then.

I've also wondered, does 3 cycles mean,
green,
yellow,
red= one cycle?

green,1,yellow,2,red,3 =3 cycles? lol

or is it three complete rotations of
your green,yellow, red, then side roads G,Y,R...and i get green again..=one cycle, and then have to do THAT 3 times,

or 3 minutes...whichever is shorter?

Just read through the HB's. It seems that HB 1981 Incorporates 1991 and the 2 cycles law overrides the 120 s law?

HB1981 Traffic lights. Allows motorcycle and moped drivers and bicycle riders, in certain situations, to proceed through intersections controlled by traffic lights showing steady red signals. This bill incorporates HB 1991.

and 1981 Says

B. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, if a driver of a motorcycle or moped or a bicycle rider approaches an intersection that is controlled by a traffic light, the driver or rider may proceed through the intersection on a steady red light only if the driver or rider (i) comes to a full and complete stop at the intersection for two complete cycles of the traffic light, (ii) exercises due care as provided by law, (iii) otherwise treats the traffic control device as a stop sign, and (iv) determines that it is safe to proceed.

while 1991 Says

B. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, if a driver of a motorcycle or moped or a bicycle rider approaches an intersection that is controlled by a traffic light, the driver or rider may proceed through the intersection on a steady red light only if the driver or rider (i) comes to a full and complete stop at the intersection for 120 seconds, (ii) exercises due care as provided by law, (iii) otherwise treats the traffic control devices as a stop sign, and (iv) determines that it is safe to proceed.

Not a lawyer so this confuses the heck out of me. Wishful thinking that it's "whatever's shorter duration"

Just because the light facing my direction of travel lanes turned green 3 times, the turn lane (same direction of travel)that i'm in, the indicator doesn't change, since i'm on a bike.


Do you guys read the scenario? You have to be on a bike to run the red after three cycles...not a car, don't get too carried away.

SC has this law also. I had to bypass a red lite in FL that didn't recognize me yesterday. I was hoping they had a law like this or that a cop didn't see me.

It's about time!!
I have sat at many a light only to watch the traffic move in all directions twice ... I would finally make a right hand turn so I can just GO !!
