If this project ever gets to seriously thinking about a new jig, please ask you bro to consider the possibility of allowing for later fitting of a fuel gauge sender. It would basically only need a flattened part somewhere along the lowest point, where interested tinkerers could make a cut-out and fit a sender unit that's been scrounged from somewhere.

There are some cute little aftermarmet instrument consoles that have a fuel gauge. I'd love to hook one up but there's just no way to fit a sender with the standard steel tank. It would be tragic to have somebody design a custom tank and not allow for this.

Seeing as kick starts are d'rigeur at the mo, does anybody know which other Yamahas have the same the same starter motor as the DT 230? Mine is toast, the magnets have come off, been glued back on but it is still munted. I was quoted $710 Au + gst for a new one.

Hey Harvey,

Did you get a quote from JP-Parts?
Bet it wouldn't be more than a couple of hundred through them.
As an example, brand new OEM power valve was $80 delivered.
Click on the quote form
Fill out bike details and enter 'STARTING MOTOR ASSY' in parts detail and enter '4TP-81800-00' in the parts number and qty '1'
Usually receive quote within a day and if you accept the quote and pay with paypal you'll usually receive the goods within 5 days.
These guys are brilliant.
I've even replaced all the crap and odd screws, washers and nuts that were on my DT230 and replaced them with OEM ones, they are that cheap.
Keen to know how you go.

That is very generous of you. We will not be doing a lot of miles in the near future so it's not too big a pain. My girlfriend is feeling quite empowered kick starting her own bike.Good for the buttocks too....

If this turns into a saga I will contact you. Thanks again.

Yup, I followed the link but don't want to go through the rigmarole of setting up ebay & paypal accounts for one purchase. We shall see what happens. I had too bite the bullet on the links, my girlfriend wrong footed sitting her test on Monday, slow speed tumble when she took the big step. No damage done but she was a bag of nerves. Still passed though.

Harvey,

I saw a post somewhere, once upon a time, where a dude was asking if he could fit a kick starter on his DT125 (as well as the factory e-start). The 125/200/230 all look the same. The 200 and 230 I know to have the same chassis and most of the engine. So there's a possibility the starter off a 125 would fit, and they apparently had a long production run in EU.

Are you sure your current starter is beyond hope?

The magnets have come off & one of them is in 3 pieces. Plan B - 2 is an auto electrician. A new starter gives me peace of mind for my girlfriend. She is really wee & it is very interesting watching her leap in the air to kick start it with both feet.Just kidding but it looks like that.....

Yup, got it today. It translates as $667. Yamaha Aus want $710. Might as well put the missus to work & get one off Yamaha. Still no news on lowering links. Will give lust a tinkle tonight. Plan c is to check the starter motor on a Yamaha Scorpio..
That kick start is a real blessing.....

Bugger me....that's just plain rude.

Does your starter look like this

If so then follow link to ebay uk for DT125R/X
However they don't say they post to Australia but if you offer to pay for postage by depositing into their PayPal account you would probably succeed. I have done that a few times now, with postage ranging from $60 to $80 from the UK.
Hope that helps.
