Old Hernandez Rd is closed

It looks to me like they narrowed up the river crossing and took out the ford. I donít believe it was done naturally.

Old news? It seems to me I went through there earlier this year.

I don't think it's closed permanently although I have heard some rumors of the local land owners would like it closed to public access. Now it might just be closed due to high water. The reservoir is as high as I've ever seen it. I know a guy lost his KLR in the river awhile ago. You might want to check with San Benito County for an actual status of the road.

Yep, that one landowner, just north of the ford, wants it closed for sure. They stopped me to tell me the road was closed. Hell, there are signs up and down the road.
I told them I was going to go look at it, they weren’t happy about that.
I think the area north of the ford was graded and the stream bed was narrowed and deepened where the ford was. It looked like soft mud in there now with verticals on both sides of the river.
I was hoping to run into a county crew working but no.
Boy, Clear Creek Rd. is getting bad just above New Idria.

That road above Idria has got a few good whoop sections in it. I just about took my self out in wash out just above the town acouple of months back. Knocked my ass about two feet off the seat and barely hung on with the toe of my boot. That's what I get for sight seeing. I hope Hernandez gets opened back up, it's an enjoyable little run through the valley. I know there has to have been an increase in motorcycle traffic through there in the last few years with the proliferation of dualsport bikes and these forums. As far as I know the ranch owners have been respected. I guess I wouldn't want people riding across my yard either.

I got my KLR out of the river and it is OK now. Seems the land owner at the north end has wanted the road closed for some time but others still want the county to take care of it. Lets hope the road remains open and the crossing mellows.

Oh Yeah, they are very unfriendly. Over the years I have seen them several times and always wave to them, they just turn away.
I am going slowly past their place and my bikes are quiet but they just donít like it

I suspect he did this to the ford; looks to me like a fill was made along the north edge of the river. And where the ford was the river bottom was excavated.

I was on Old Hernandez the other day. For the last year or so I have been able to get through but not on Wednesday.
The landowner on the north has become proactive again. He has put up a fence where I and others have been crossing the river. I could have taken it out easily but I was reluctant to do that.
While I was there he came riding up and we had an interesting conversation.
He told me I was Trespassing on his property. I told him I was on Old Hernandez Rd, a county road which I have been using since the 60ís. And which has been in use by the public for far longer then that.
He says there is no easement through his property.
I told him to call the county sheriff, he has a trespasser on his land and Iíll have it out with them.
He didnít seem to want to do that.
We discussed the ford across the river. I told him how dismayed I was that the county had removed it. He claims they didnít, it was a natural process.
That is BS, the ford was excavated out and they did a really nice job of it. If the county didnít do it, I wonder who did.
A trap was laid for the first unwary motorist that came by, resulting in an excuse to close the road.

A dump truck full of baby head sized rocks should fix the ford. Call cal trans.

This was taken in 2012. That ditch was definitely dug by someone, and the Creek re-routed somehow. If you follow the creek off to the right ... you can find a work around, its a bit soft. My buddies were on larger street bikes so we turned round, I think I could have made it on my DR650.

The Rancher at the house was not around.

I've ridden down this route for over 20 years. I hope the County/State get onto to what the land owner has done here. Sounds illegal to me?

It was but he denies it. He says it happed naturally.
Bull, the ford was excavated out; the material was placed on the north side of the river, raising the elevation and then that was covered with what looked like imported rock.

Yeah but the county officially closed the road at the river crossing.
A bike went into the river and was lost for three weeks. The river is a valuable source of water for many many ranchers. You can not pollute it.
The locals would just as soon have the road closed, or it would be open.
