If I read it correctly he started the SS 10ish minutes ago at 11:07 local time.

I think the difference now is that with the web we hear about stuff in near real-time, and so have a constant awareness of what is happening. Years ago this same sort of attrition took place each day, but the only ones who knew at the time were the competitors themselves.

Read "Against Gravity" and see how many folks went out during the run from Paris to the ferry to cross the Med. And back then, if you missed the ASO chartered ferry you were on your own to get across the Med in time to keep going.
