But you have to factor in the law of diminishing returns. To increase speed from 80% of the aliens to 100% doesn't just take 20% more effort / power / skill / money... it may very require 2 or 3 times more.

Point being that Ned seems to have a very keen sense of his limits, and is riding to finish, not racing to beat the aliens. We can compare his time to the leaders' all we want, but his yardstick while he's racing out there on the stages is all internal. And that is hugely commendable and smart.

And if I think about it, that's probably how CDP and MC and the other aliens are racing -- it's not a head to head competition while they're out there, it's single file; they are all pushing their own limits by themselves. No way the racers know the standings at each checkpoint, right?
