I can assure you he is riding modestly. It's been the plan the whole time to preserve himself, the bike and finish. He mentions in one of the call in's that he is not pushing his pace in the technical stuff and slowing waaay down in the dust.

Now, where his comfortable pace is relative to some of the rest of us? It may seem aggressive.

Hilslamer, I think you have video (audio) proof of this.

It's unreal how fast and loud that kid snores. 1 minute he's awake, the next minute he's snoring and everyone else is awake.

You can just imagine it - the team camped next door to Ned's tent are anxiously waiting for their missing rider to arrive late at night after a long day out in the desert.

All of a sudden they hear a noise and think a bike is on it's way - only to realise it's Ned snoring

Ned's gonna kill you when he gets back home and sees you all talking about his snoring.

Now we just need his mom telling us about "that cute little accident he had when he was three" and his professional reputation is tarnished forever.

It may be hard for Ned to catch his breath, but shouldn't be dangerous.
The problem the last few years wasn't the sickness it was the 'falling asleep' on the bike. IIRC at least one rider crashed heavily in 2011 and had to retire!

I didnt think it was possible to fall asleep on a bike...then a bought a heated jacket and my perception on this changed.

I only say that about his pace because I have indeed spent a lot of seat time with Ned, on a lot of different bikes and in a lot of different conditions and in looking at the pictures and seeing his roost levels, I can tell you that Ned can certainly go faster than that by a good measure. Perhaps not when the chips are down and he's there to finish - not to win - but in shorts sprints playriding(and some longer days too), he's got a lot more absolute speed in him, skill wise, even on that bike, than we're seeing here. I don't know, I've never been there or done that, i just know that Ned has made some miles in a day on several different types of bikes that were more impressive that what I see going on so far.

Maybe I just have blind faith and hold him on a higher standard. In any case, he's doing very very well and we're all super stoked for him.

Is it riding smart or riding modestly? We will find out...I think it is modestly smart.

Anyways, thanks for the color. I know you guys spend a lot of seat time together.
+1. If anyone can concentrate on their goals, it's Ned, and I'm confident that finishing will be accomplishment enough for him. A top-30 or maybe even better position will be the icing on the cake...and hopefully what brings him back.

Color is about all I have to add...LOL, otherwise I'd either be down there racing or wrenching myself right now!...I don't and probably never will have the focus, patience, ability or money to go there myself, so for now I live vicariously through others, and it's even easier to do through a friend.

LOL...he's pretty shameless about it IIRC...

I'm probably the only one in the world that has video of him snoring, but you can hear his signature uvula chattering away right here:

I had to take that one time to show him how bad it really was, and he still didn't believe me. It goes on like that the entire time he's asleep.
