First call from Ned, as a Dakar Finisher!

Dakar finisher's medal in hand, Ned calls us with a quick update from the hotel following the podium presentations. Congrats, Ned. Goal met. Can't wait to hear what it feels like once that thought has firmly sunk in.

We will be back for a detailed debrief with Ned once things have settled. Stay tuned here or in Ned's thread.

Congratulations Ned!

Jeanne asked me if Despres won?

I said, "Who cares?, Ned finished!"

Congrats on sticking to your plan and not getting caught up in the race.

And thanks again for keeping us all involved and up to date.

It was definitely the most insight I have ever had into this race.

See you on the trails!

Wade

OK, I think now that I've heard his voice it's really sinking in-wow. Kind of a relief all of a sudden, the tension is letting off. Today there will be some Layer Cake

I bet that's going the be the bestest shower and nap ever!
Enjoy it Ned, you earned that one!! (and please throw the sewer river socks away if they're still following you around or they won't let you through customs )

To be able to share the experience with everyone and be able to hear your thoughts has been unbelievable! Thank you for taking us on your journey!

CONGRATS NED! YOU ROCK!
+1

Ned,

We are so proud of you for what you have accomplished in your journey. You perfected a plan and then its execution, you made it to the finish and never get sucked into racing blindly in the dust and crashing out.

From all accounts that we couch riders heard on RallyRaidio (BTW thanks so much!), there is something even more important that you need to stop and REALIZE and allow you to congratulate yourself on. And that is this...
You kept true to yourself in every way...
It was clear in hearing your thoughts along the way that you obviously have "the right stuff" in your heart and soul as well. Attitude is Everything, and you kept yours on track. You made a great ambassador for not only representing yourself well but also everything else you are associated with - your FamDuro family, your ADV compadres, your sponsors, motorcycle enthusiasts in general, and even like somebody said - thanks for representing the USA in a positive light for the rest of the world to see! [cue the "Rocky" theme music] This will carry you a long way the rest of your life and is what is important long after the adrenaline rushes out of your system from this unforgettable life experience. So congrats to the entire FamDuro as well!

A couple years back, I bought your fabulous DoubleTake mirrors and actually talked to you on the phone about an install issue. I still have never met you in person but hope to soon...
anyhow little did I know on that phone call that I was talking to a FUTURE...

Official 2012 Dakar Rally Finisher !!!

Props to you and all prior Dakar Finishers... perhaps we can hear from the rest of you guys out there? (Bonez?)

So... got your Dakar tattoo yet??

(I took this photo on Baja 500 race day... but posted without permission of subject, a certain modest and rarely-posting ADV-er from Colorado...) hehehe...

I hope the SoCO guys come up with a welcome home celebration bash (on a weekend? :) so that maybe the rest of us proud Coloradoans and everybody else can lift a glass to you in person!

To all your close ADV buddies:
It's great to see people help out a man with a dream and remain true loyalists, but I also want to thank you for making the rest of US a part of this experience by posting your insights on the bike prep, training, and Ned the man. I stayed up too late each night keeping up with the whole thread, and was dragging to work each day, but I was mesmerized.

To the sponsors:
As stated above, thanks for helping make this possible and as stated above, I'm sure financially it will recoup itself, I've already got my eye on stuff from a few vendors I was unaware of, just by following along.

Still waiting for a video of that Peruvian wheelie! I know it's gotta be out there somewhere!

-matt NICE JOB NED !

In a room for the first time in weeks. Alone and not riding for the first time in weeks. *A Dakar finisher, which is a club I have long aspired to join. There's no shortcuts to get there, and I'm proud of it.*

The first thing on my mind is thanks, especially to Chris and Scot, who helped me make a bike that served perfectly and faithfully for the entire Dakar. We made it in a garage and it looks better at the finish than most, after requiring almost nothing for the entire ride but tires and oil. And also to Wings and Justin and John and Kelly and Dave and Mom and so many others who helped how they could, when they could, and gave me the strength to go.*

Second is what a great thing adv is. People have been doing this race for a long time, but getting to share the experience as I have is new and, IMO, darn cool.*

I was thinking on the last leg today about Nate's comment that it sounds easy. It's not. I have been trying to keep my head in a positive place because on the first night, I was wondering what I'd gotten myself into and how I could possibly make it from here to there. Turns out the answer is one meter at a time, one problem at a time, one day at a time. I always believed I could, but I wasn't always sure how.*

The finishers medal is satisfyingly heavy, btw. Tim, Ted, and the crew are just turning up so more later.*
