"Dear Cycle News,

Thank you for mentioning me in your article about the Dakar. I understand you may have mentioned something about my riding ability. To be honest with you, I haven't actually had the time to read the article- I'm too busy admiring this big-ass Dakar Rally Finisher's Medal that's sitting on my desk.

Sincerely,

Neduro"

The best American rider finished the race. Period.

If you look at any race between competitors as a test, the winner is the best rider for that race. It's very simple.

Duh.

Great job Ned!

I agree wholeheartedly.

Hello,

I recently saw an article you published about the only American to finish the 2012 Dakar Rally, Ned Suesse. The opening line of the article(attached; hilited in red) reads:

"There may have been better American riders in the Dakar Rally this year than Ned Suesse, but he holds the distinction of being the only one who finished."

I sincerely hope that this was meant to me sarcastically-humorous, because in any case it's a pretty backhanded way to mention anyone in my opinion. For example: in the supercross coverage last week they didn't say that "...there may have been better bikes were in the race, but a KTM was on the podium." That's like me telling a friend: "Hey, check out the latest issue of Cycle News - it's not the best motorcycle magazine, but it's available online and it reads ok."

Furthermore, you might consider showing a picture that actually shows the whole finish podium of the Dakar - that picture looks like it could have been staged anywhere. It's even a crooked picture! There were all sorts of pictures of him racing the rally that were spectacular; and many more wider-angle but still legible pictures of he and his team clearly smiling on the Dakar 2012 podium. You could have just as easily used one of those and put a proper finish-podium picture in the lower corner as an inset.

I appreciate that you got the word out about Americans in the Dakar, but please try and edit respectfully. The Dakar already lacks coverage and awareness in North America and we don't need our own journalists slandering our own racers/representatives to our own people.

I'm no the only one who feels this way:

I guess faster would have been a better choice of words. Didn't mean to disrespect Ned in anyway… just wanted to give him coverage that we didn't give on him earlier in the Rally.

I don't think word substitution would have changed what you were saying with that sentence. The whole sentence should have been written differently and structured so as to avoid double meanings.

As in all forms of racing, to finish first, you must first finish. Quinn and Jonah were certainly faster in stages but for their own reasons, did not finish...that makes Ned faster than them in the 2012 Dakar.

Tim

Whoopsee, I know it wasn't your intention, but you're making it public now, here...by posting the details.

+1 on that point.

Very weird.
I went to the FB page. I don't think it was a swipe at Ned or the Dakar, just lax editing.

Yeah I agree he doesn't get it. Particularly when he asked if you were a friend! And why would he 'get it'? He's from the world where your last lap time is who you are.

Basically, I think he was unimpressed. No doubt he needs a couple season's of fire hose time...

On the other hand, he's trying to save his publication. He's generally a good scribe. We should probably cut him some slack.

If Cycle News had a thread here instead of their own site/forum they would get lots more hits.
