Maybe Ned last minute decided on a taller gearing today to battle the 700 tarmac kms?

Anyway, first test was successfully overcome!

That was my thought; I'd run relatively tall gearing today, knowing that the special was so short.

like previously stated: just meant he needed to go faster? Besides the point now, he's safely at the bivouac

How about the other American Riders?

Does anyone have the SS1 finishing numbers on Street and Bill? Or where to get them?

Glad Ned is in and safe!

He has to be feeling great, Stage 1 of the DAKAR done! It's REAL now!

It's pretty damn exciting to see the first timers in this race, and to be so tied in to it. 10 years ago, there was no coverage anywhere in the USA unless you knew racers. Now, it's unbelievable what we get to live vicariously.

Ok so (77) means 77th rider to start, will this vary each stage and track your overall class position ?
Yes, this will vary every day depending on last day's result. So Ned will start as 75th bike tomorrow. If he wins the stage, he will start 1st in SS3.

Generally, it means nothing more than a bookkeeping problem. His tracker may have been out of order, will will see this many times. Actually missed way points result in heavy time penalties that will become apparent on the next day.

A little help, please. Are the tarmac stages racing stages, or speed controlled transits between special stages?

Thanks!

Bill was 138th, Jonah was 10th, and Quinn Cody was 4th!

Speed controlled transit. Today was extreme because the racing stage was only 57km with 763km of transit.

Green=transit (liaison)
Red=racing stage (special stage)

Skibum, how about one pushup, squat or situp for every post on the F5irehose/Jonah/Ned/BC threads and you won't have to get out of sight of the computer? That oughta do it.

Then again, I don't have that much fuel on board or that much spares/equipment etc either. I can see being down on power, and it will only worsen exponentially with elevation. If the guy on the 150XC can make it through though, Ned should be fine.

With regards to his finish today, and knowing Neds relative speed, my guess is that he's not even riding to 75% of the safe zone on his scale. Wich is smart, keep that wrist healthy and save the bursts for when others make mistakes in Navigation!
...
Bingo! That's exactly it-his navigation skills are strong and he knows better than to follow the herd of sheep
He has to keep himself strong and healthy and the bike in good shape..... that's just my strategy, but I know he can give the competition a run for their money
