That was my thought; I'd run relatively tall gearing today, knowing that the special was so short.

I know Ned said he was geared too high, and I noticed his stage time was ssslightly faster than Bill's... Im only half in the bag

Glad Ned is in and safe!

He has to be feeling great, Stage 1 of the DAKAR done! It's REAL now!

It's pretty damn exciting to see the first timers in this race, and to be so tied in to it. 10 years ago, there was no coverage anywhere in the USA unless you knew racers. Now, it's unbelievable what we get to live vicariously.

Yes, this will vary every day depending on last day's result. So Ned will start as 75th bike tomorrow. If he wins the stage, he will start 1st in SS3.

Generally, it means nothing more than a bookkeeping problem. His tracker may have been out of order, will will see this many times. Actually missed way points result in heavy time penalties that will become apparent on the next day.

what time is it where you are? I've only had a couple of brews so far and am trying to drag myself away long enough to go to the gym. Got to to keep up with bluebull's expectations

Speed controlled transit. Today was extreme because the racing stage was only 57km with 763km of transit.

Green=transit (liaison)
Red=racing stage (special stage)

With regards to his finish today, and knowing Neds relative speed, my guess is that he's not even riding to 75% of the safe zone on his scale. Wich is smart, keep that wrist healthy and save the bursts for when others make mistakes in Navigation!

Bingo! That's exactly it-his navigation skills are strong and he knows better than to follow the herd of sheep

He has to keep himself strong and healthy and the bike in good shape..... that's just my strategy, but I know he can give the competition a run for their money
