You will know you are headed the right direction once the road starts to look like this

Don't miss your first glimpse of the lake. These power lines will factor in the story in a bit. Notice the elevation:

The road get a bit more interesting

Go through this tunnel in the trees. After this you will be on the flood plain. Follow the tracks that bear left to the campsite/tag!

far side of the tunnel. almost there

The ruts in the tunnel must have been a bit rocky

Some views of the lake

I was pretty sure there was an alternate way out, so I decided to explore to give youse guys some options. And options you will have.

The initial trail was as innocent looking as could be

some gentle elevation

There were a few bogs to work around on the low laying land, but nothing to cause concern on the street tired DRZ.

One lower option trail seemed to be purposely blocked be a chest high log, so I figured there was a reason. The trail was certainly getting interesting and starting to climb at a significant rate. Traction was fine on the street tires though so I kept on going. I was grinning at my progress as things were starting to get "Laughing Man" steep. And just like Laughing Man, there was a near vertical bump half way up. I didn't make it. Though my attempt was feeble.

Considering the trail was just getting steeper and steeper, I decided to turn back. A significant decision because I had already gone up a considerable way.

I found a bailout and took it. Back to happy days. Here is looking back up the previously mentioned powerlines. The trail is in the trees on the right, I was above that first pole. Different bike and knobs and I will go on up it next time.

The trail back into the woods from the powerline break

There is a beautiful runoff tributary going right through the trail

looking down into the lake

looking back

looking up

Over the crest brought me to this

and for perspective

This is important because this is an option for getting to the tag.

and hmmm

This is the entrance/exit to this trail from Route 46 along the south end of the lake

Sorry if this long post is not in the spirit of things. I don't know how else you would find the tag though.

IMHO, the way I came in from Elk Garden is the easy approach and it would be easier to go back that way too. But I don't regret my exploring the other option one bit. It was awesome and done on street tires, no bark busters, no case savers, just the factory skid plate which did touch down a time or 3.

Ken, let me know if that is what you had in mind.

That actually turned out to be more 'adventurous' than I had imagined.

It was great fun though. Really.

You can get the KLR in and out of that tag - just don't do the options!

All bull shit aside, this is as good of tag set up as I've ran across, and I've been sent to Rand McNally twice for Tag Addiction Rehab. You know how to tell a tale. In case you think nobody noticed your effort, this is for you, early on in the game, so that all who follow see it. And I hope they see this as the standard for setting all tags. Keep it "Hardcore Tag", and don't let it become "Lame Tag".

This ain't a gift. Street tires, no bash plate or hand gauards, and you're out climbing a mountain for a tag game. You earned it.
