3 days in West Virginia (July 15-17, 2011)

TwoHawks and I went for a three day ride on some great roads in West Virginia, I started out in Bunker Hill, WV needed to get an inspection on the bike, didnt need a ticketThen it was off to Strasburg VA to meet TwoHawks. Some of you may have already seen most of these places but most was new to me...

Off toward Spruce Knob via Lost River

some Red Rasberries along the way

Spruce Knob...

We headed to Camp Allegheny site of a civil war battle.

Debated on where to spend the night there at camp Allegheny or the state camp ground Island Campground (the sites are closed to cars due to the two small bridges being unsafe… but ADVers can squeeze through the big rocks) or Laurel Forks… we decieded to stay at Island Campground...

The 3 guys with Harleys and one on a Goldwing trike w/trailers had to carry their gear in....the only guy to chat with us was the gentleman on the Goldwing go figure....I digress.

Next morning we were off to NRAO (the free tour is worth the time) and Cheat Bridge/Shavers Fork (where you could take a ride on train Cheat Mountain Salamander)...

NRAO...man this thing is big...!!!

Cement train....???

Where is the Salamander ?

There is a thread about KLRs and a Cattle call....

Next off to Black Water Falls (wish we had stop in Durbin for the Festival Days… oh well maybe next time)...

Windmills west of Thomas.

Black Water Falls... yeah I know everyone has seen them...

Went to the Purple Fiddle for some eats...

Appetizer of humus and pita bread...was given the stuffed anmial so they knew where to deliver our food ... we thought about kidnapping the elephant for a tag-o-rama game...

two interesting things in an alley way up from the purple fiddle....

Old train and manure spreader in Thomas/Coketon.

After camping at Black Water Fall - we headed back to our homes but stopped at Lake Storm...

biggest pile of coal i have every seen...

and then some more Civil War History @ Greensburg Gap...

Well Hope you werent bored too much... it was a great weekend to ride...

Very nice! I met the guy who owns that Ascot 500 with the DS front end. He is usually hanging around the fiddle and will almost always talk bikes. I see him just about every time I go. Nice pics thanks!

Looks like it was a nice ride. Thanks for the link to ABPP site, didn't know about that. Is it true there is no potable water at Island campground?

Correct no potable water.... Had water with us and boiled the water, so we were good, truthfully probably would have drank it out of the stream....also Camp Allegheny there is just a place people have been camping along side the road.

Thumb Brother's Trip 2011...more fotos

The trip was outstanding...one of the best...even though it was only 3 days. Great weather...plans worked out...and beautiful roads...new to me and known...

From Strasburg to Spruce Knob and Green Bank, through Durbin and Cheat to Elkins and Black Water Falls around by Mt. Storm and back...

Back roads and not so back roads.

Grabbing the Appalachian Tag

More Raspberry pics

Crazy big fans to keep the West Virginian's cool in Summer

Obligatory camping photo

This place did work out well...

Brother's Trip 2011 was a great success...can't wait for next time...Alaska maybe...

view from Spruce Knob

Nice trip, brothers! Heartwarming
Thanks for sharing!
And strong resemblence...
So I don't know if you are twin brothers but I think by that photo you could pass as such.

Great report and ride, love the pics. Never assume we've been there or seen these before. Even if we have It's the thing where you see someone's picture and you say "Hey cool I've been there"! You may have the shot we missed! Got any more?
