How did the Finke attempt go?

I did it in 2007 on my 434e & ran 54th outright.

Good pic from a mag of me hunting down the crf450...

Cool - braggin rights with that pic.

I did it in 2004 on a '99 model TTR250. It was my first ever race. The bolts for my right foot peg snapped off at Deep Well on the run home- there was nothing to rest my foot on. 60km of whoops on one leg!

But I got the railway spike (for those that don't know- finishers at Finke get a customised railway spike as a trophy).

211th outright.... about 7hrs 20min from memory.

Gee Gizmoe,

Can't get away from you can I? We had a chat over in the dirt bike world forum. Thanks for the finke advise, still ended up strapped to hospital bed!

G'day Gadget, how many other guys are doing this trip with you and what are they riding?
And how long do you think it will take?
Do you have a limit on how many guys you want to join you?

So far, 1.... A mate from Perth (My safari mechanic) He's looking at getting a DRZ for the trip (he doesn't want to take the CRF or GS).

We didn't want too many as you end up spaced too far apart in the desert to keep in touch effectively... Jim's thought (which made sense to me) was he takes one extra from WA, and I take one extra from Vic, that way no-one will be riding alone at any point. But it's all a work in progress at this point, so let me know what's on your mind.

Realistically, I'm thinking at least 2-3 weeks for the round trip.

I did the APC rally this year and was planning on doing it again next year until I saw this.
How good a rider does one have to be to join ya's?
Also Im riding a DR650, is that a problem? A DRZ is a possibility though as I was considering something lighter anyway for next years rally.

Anyway, early days

Cheers Jason

Absolutely- but let's go riding anyway!

I'm just working on some days to head back up to the Sunset Desert for a bit of a play around... There's a few ADVers that want to play in the sand. Will-from my last ride up there- wants to ride the DRZ without a load/ compare suspension etc. I was looking at having a play on an enduro track, and possibly some private dunes while up there... I just have to get permission first.

Anyway, I've tentatively pencilled in Sept 30th (pm) to Oct 3rd. (My son will be up there for a few days with my parents- so I have to go up to get him... might as well ride for a few days first.) Interested???

#44, How are ya??? Long time no-hear.

6 Bikes???- there was only 3 last time I saw you. I'd love to catch up with you and your 'crew' (Say HI for me) when I come over.

Has Jim called you recently? (He was going to) What are your plans for this time next year? (ie: Want to ride across Oz?)

Safari this year? (I heard Dave was talking about it)

Nicki washed my phone a while ago, so I lost your number ... could you please PM it to me?

Cheers,
Mark

Yeah i now have a R6, KLX300 motard, 450EXC (you know the one), 125SX and a pair of pit bikes!

Yeah i spoke to jim recently, and unfortunately wasnt free for a ride, but i may be next year!

Riding across OZ next year sounds fun, but im already at this side! So things might have to be planned! Im going to Philip Island next year for MotoGP already. When you planning on your ride?

Steve

Is the GP still in Oct? How were you planning on getting there? How many coming? How long will you be here? Where are you staying?

I'm looking at July/August for my ride. Our thought is to ride from West coast to East coast. Jim's idea is that we take a few extras- one from the East, one from the West.... that way neither of us will be riding alone at any point. You have to get home somehow- might as well ride. From my perspective, I have to get to the West first- might as well ride.

Mr Gadget sir,

Can you post a pic or two of you exhaust header pipe? I'm re-doing my bashplate with incorperated tool/water cavity and notice your header has been modified/swapped.

Cheers,
Topo

Not a problem Topo.

As mentioned earlier in the thread (I think), this is the header built by Staintune. http://www.staintune.com.au/exhausts/suzuki/Suzuki_DR400_Z.htm (if you open this thread, you'll see the inspiration for my Safari build)I'll try to get some more pics tomorrow for you.

I found this while I was looking for the header photo: Look behind my bike! (It ended up three places in front of me by the end of the Safari)

How's that fairing coming along?... post pics if you like.

The fairing's on hold for the moment, I've just ordered some new tanks from aqualine (17ltr front, 5ltr wrf rear). Once i get them back to NZ after the Safari i'll probably start again as i made a few mistakes in the first one which are easy to fix on the seccond time around.

Cheers for the headder pic.
