Somehing rubbing on the right side

Recently I have felt and heard a kind of scraping coming from the right side of my F650GS. The scraping sound like something is out of round and scraping sometimes. This noise and feeling on the right peg are most noticeable around 3500-4000 rpm.

After being gone a few days and going to check on the bike I noticed that there is this reddish powdery substance on the right side of the bike which you can see very well in the picture below. It rubs off when touching it and it is not rust.

When I pull the clutch in the noise goes away. Which kind of leads me to believe maybe the transmission but I'm usually wrong at this kind of diagnosis. The chain looks OK as do the sprockets. I did need to tighten the chain at around 18,500-19k miles.

Any ideas of what this may be from? Bike has ~21,000 miles on it and has not done this before.

Can't really tell what is rubbing and causing that color of dust.

At a minimum, I would take the front sprocket off and see if there is side to side play in the output shaft.

Hopefully it is rust off a chain. Over tightening a chain can do damage to the bearing that supports the shaft.

But there is a seal between the sprocket and the bearing and would expect to see an oil leak.

Good chance you'll already solve the problem with cleaning the inside of the front sprocket cover. Could be there is a piece of rock of some sort jammed in the collection of grease and dirt behind there which just hits your chain at a certain tension (say around 3500-4000 rpm).

Could also be a sign of the start of wearing out your chain, just turn the wheel and check the chain for bad spots.

I'd say from looking at the photo that you should at least clean and lube your chain! pull thesproket cover and remove any junk that might be in there. How many miles? My chain was about used up at 20,000 miles but i lubed mine once in a while

Take a look at this thread:

It might help to follow that guy's advice.

I cleaned the inside of the sprocket cover when I last cleaned the chain about ~1,500 miles ago. I did pull it again and it looks OK have not fully cleaned it off again yet just looked at it.

What looks dirty is kind of. the bike sits in a parking lot at home (not a real garage) and there has been lots of wind so stuff has been blowing around and catching everywhere. I do keep a cover on it but there were 30-70 mph winds earlier this week.

This is not rust.

I will check the chain later today for any "bad" spots, kinks, etc.

Thank you so far.

I finally had a chance last night to look at this further. The chain was a little loose but not much. However, there are a few links that are kinked and the sprockets are looking a little worn but not too bad. There was no rubbing on the chain that I could see.

So I guess it may be time to replace the chain and sprockets.

just a heads up - not sure if the f650 has the same rear sprocket issue as the f800 but there are two versions of the sprocket. one with 8mm holes and one with 10mm holes. if you buy a sprocket, make sure you get the right size holes in the sprocket.

Interesting, do you know the build dates for the 8 and for the 10mm holes?
That is to say, which model years have which?

Thanks for the tip. I will make sure to check on this prior to placing an order.
