Making Portable Maps with Streets & Trips
Either I'm a computer dummy, or MS Streets & Trips is a mess. (or both)
Hey, I want to print out maps from S&T to take with me on my tank bag. But I can't get the detail I want. If I zoom the map out too far, it won't print out the small roads that I want to ride on. Too close a zoom and I'm not covering enough area on that 1 page. Is there a manual detail button? Any other ideas? Thanks. |

You're no help.
I've got a 276. But I want to free wheel it to Daytona. I'm thinking about a leisurely drive there, mostly on roads paralleling the Gulf Coast. But I don't want to create a route plan, as it will undoubtedly change and I'm not sure where I'm stopping every night. But whereas LA is a decently wide(ish) state, MS and AL are pretty narrow. It's too much hassle dealing with regular state maps. |

Buy a compass- head east by southeast. When you can't smell the ocean anymore- it's time for a right turn.

Your complaint is a frequent one. S&T map detail is dependent on zoom scale. This done to keep the map from getting so cluttered, it is impossible to read. I know of no workaround.
If you're mostly pavement, I've found AAA maps are the best tank bag maps and have a very nice compromise between detail and being able to be read. And commercially-printed maps have much better print quality. You might try doing your planning in S&T and then highlight AAA maps. - Mark |

I go to Walmart every year and buy a new Road Atlas. The previous years atlas becomes my "tank bag map doner"....I tear out any maps I need and if new roads have been added I note it. Works for me!

I had the same complaint about S&T's It sucked, bigtime! Drove me to get a Garmin- now I have a similar problem with the software they sell- City Select. Does anybody have something they like in the computer software area? Something compatible with the Garmin would be great~ City Select ain't bad- but it would seem that they could do soooo much more to make this tool user friendly.

I used to live by the Delorme Gazetteers- used them to find out of the way flyfishing sports throughtout northern New England. It was pretty good- but a couple of times a year I'd find blatant errors in their maps- even "found" a town in Vermont that was listed in DeLorme and wasn't actually there!?! Their scale makes them hard to use and to carry on the bike- lots of detail per page- but not much mileage! They're based in Freeport, Me- right down the road from LL Bean- pretty hard core bunch that work there- I'd think their stuff is pretty good at this point and would be worth a look. They do some GPS stuff too- I'll have to check 'em out. Don't know why I didn't think of them for this stuff~ thanks for reminding me~

Yeah, I've got the Gazetteer for Tx. And I've ripped the pages out for the areas of interest to me. I was referring to, though, the DeLorme software that is similar to S&T. |

I print them using the option that has directions on one half and the map on the other "strip maps" then fold in half. On the more options page you can select the number of miles per page. The less miles the more details. Turn by turn maps are just too much. Hope that helps.

For Texas it's hard to beat the "Roads of Texas" atlas. Better detail than the DeLorme and all the names/numbers of county roads are listed. Take a look here- http://users.ev1.net/~aa5ib/roads.html Randy

Making portable maps....
If you can get a copy of the map to show on the screen of your computer, hit "control" and the "PrtScrn" button(top of keyboard, above the insert key). That is an old DOS command to do a screen capture. Open any graphics editing program...example...Paint. Go to the "edit" button, click on it, and then click on paste. Your screen capture is now a graphics file. Crop out the crap you don't want, make it bigger or smaller as you please, and then hit print.
Good Luck, Dave Quote:
