I wore shorts just before a rallye once and accidentally burnt my leg on the the exhaust when I had to back the bike up a couple of feet and did it naturally by paddling backwards instead of climbing off and hauling the bike backwards. You know how, if you slightly overshoot a stopping point, you hold the front brake on, compress the forks with a lean down and then as the forks rebound you pull on the bars and push with your feet. That put my right calf in the perfect spot to just touch the header lightly and ever so briefly. That burn was a right royal PITA for the entire week of the rallye and took a while to heal afterwards because it kept getting torn up while riding each day. So my tip for the week - DO NOT RIDE IN SHORTS EVEN IF JUST OVER THE PODIUM. It's just not worth the risk of compromising your riding for the rallye proper.

Bill called at 3:14 a.m., EST. I was barely conscious but recall him sounding great and really excited that they were off to the the official start of the race.

Dude. How did you get the phone call? What am I?

He did so well today! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Hopefully one of us will get to speak to him this afternoon to see what his thoughts were on SS1.
