In my opinion, I like the bulk of my weight to be as low as possible. The bike is designed in the same fashion.

Permutations and Combinations

Although I had a Rotopax tank for my 690 before Alleycatdad started this thread, I blame him for my Rotopax craziness. I added a mount to my CJ rack today.

Add a couple of Rotopax 2 gallon tanks and you could have combinations that give up to 11.1 gallons. All of these combinations work well with my Coyote bag and Wolfman dry bag. BTW, my bike came with Gobi bags from the previous owner, but I have never used them because they seem so wide. I like the idea of a setup which provides just enough storage space and extra fuel as required by the ride. The Rotopax mounts are easy on/off, but I usually just leave them on when they are not used.

Some of these combinations are also used on my 690.

I've been meaning to hack together a rotopax solution for the SE... Finally prototyped something up yesterday.

The SE has slightly modified KTM 950 Supermoto luggage racks, similar to the Adventure racks but much smaller hoops. I'm also running a single 2->1 Neduro exhaust with FMF pipe and wanted to have it fit inside the rack on the side without the exhaust can.

Design objectives:
  • Cheap, simple, easy
  • Robust and crash resistant
  • Easy to fill
  • Completely removable
  • Usable with soft luggage

A few ikea cutting boards and some spare hardware, voilà! My intention was to replace the outer panel with heavy aluminum plate, but I think I'll give it some testing with just the HDPE.

The mounting plate doesn't attach to the luggage rack directly, it just has an inner piece that fits in the rack hole perfectly and an outer, larger piece that allows the rotopax mount to pull everything tight.

Here's the aluminum plate I'll make the final outer panel out of...

Cool, I really like what you did... it's exactly what I planned to do... but never did!
Nice to see the rotopax can fit in this place

Hey DJ-

Are those Roto's on your luggage racks in the last picture the 2gal size?

Those are not the 2 gallons.

I have the 2 gallon on mine and it is the same size as the black Rotopax toolcase in this photo...

Must be the 1 gallon size.

Here is a 2 gallon...

Craig, I assume those are the plates I sent you?

It looks like they are working great!

Actually that is not my bike....but yes the plate is working great and provides good support for the Toolbox and 2 gallon tank I have mounted to it.

Brokenin2- Thanks for that clarification. Been trying to visualize how much space the 2gal (or 3 gallon) would take up.

Has anyone mounted 2 Rotopaxs side by side on the rear rack? They would stick out over the panniers, spread the weight out a little more, and might be easier to stack camping stuff on top of. Obviously you couldn't do that if you took off your panniers, and yes it would be a pain to take them off every time you needed to get into your panniers. Just wondering if anyone has tried it.

2 gallons on the rack would take this much space and be 3" high.

4 gallons would be 6" high stacking them.

The CJ rack is not wide enough to mount 2 tanks side by side because the narrow dimension puts the tank mounting slot sideways.

I thought the CJDesgins rack extended over the exhaust? I know the BDCW rack extends pretty far out. I was then thinking you could drill the rack to accept two Roto Pax mounts, side by side. Im ordering a couple 1.75 gallon tanks to see if it will work, and also a 3 gallon tank since a single tank is probably the best route to go.

Edit, The BDCW Large rack is 12 x 17 wide, the CJDesgins is 11.5 x 14 wide.

EDIT EDIT:
Like this, but across the entire back.
