Well its up and running again, albeit a bit slow. I expect that will be sorted out in the next day or two.

I'm from the US and will be in Johannesburg and Capetown this May with a buddy. This time, we are going to ride! Damn the expense and time.

What route and from what starting point do you reccomend? We are campers but don't want to be eaten by lions. The more remote and scenic the better. Would like to be off pavement as much as possible.

Thx.

Laugh Where to ride in SA in May

May is one of the best months in Southern Africa to ride, so you have a choice of Jo'burg or Cape Town at that time of the year. If you have enough time you could even get in some Botswana and Namibia too at that time of the year. Here are some options, depending on what sort of thing you want to see, game, seaside, mountains, etc.:
  • Option 1. (28 days) Start in Cape Town, go north though Namibia, on into Botswana, Vic Falls, Zimbabwe, Kruger Park, Swaziland, Durban, Drakensberg, (Lesotho option) down the garden route with some Karoo back to Cape Town.
  • Option 2. (21 days) Start in Cape Town, go north though Namibia, on into Botswana, Vic Falls, Zimbabwe, Kruger Park, end up in Joburg.
  • ...Many other shorter options (3 to 14+ days) out from Cape Town or Joburg too. These could start and end in the same city or start and end in the opposite city in either direction.
  • In my slightly biased opinion, there are more interesting dirt roads in the Cape Town surrounds so aim for this if you have less time. Otherwise do 1 above and get it all in!
Whatever you end up doing we certainly promise you won't be disappointed. Southern Africa has an incredible selection and variety of dirt and paved riding

Cape roads

Yes, the Western Cape has some of the best gravel-road touring in SA, maybe drop Radioman a PM, since he just did a 7-week swing thru Southern Africa, and can give you some pointers...
Cheers

You can have a good time starting in Port Elizabeth. Follow the coast east along the "Garden Route" or west to the Wild Coast. Either way, you can then turn inland on the way back into the Great Karroo. There are some good game parks in the area (Addo, Kariega). Some have "non predator" sections you can ride a bike through. Don't miss Addo beach if you are in the area. Go to lunch at the Zuurberg Inn near Kariega. I rented a KLR from Wild Cherry Adventures in P.E. a few years ago. It was a good bike for the job and pretty reasonable cost. They set me up w/ gear too.

There are excellent B&B's all over at reasonable prices. If you want a list of places we have stayed PM me. Or for more don't miss spots depending on what area you end up in.

Be aware that driving conditions, habits, and pretty much everything else is different there - above and beyond the wrong side of the road thing. Don't push distances and end up riding at night.

Agreed. Fully! I once ended up taking too much time riding down the Natal South Coast on my way through the Transkei to Port St. Johns and ended up only getting in at 9pm and in the rain too! Nightmare.

It was so dark and with pouring rain and mist visibility was really bad, I was down to about 50 km/h at that time, I nearly ran into a dead cow in the middle of the road, which a taxi / minibus had just hit. it has stopped and had no lights on. I vowed there and then NEVER to ride after dark in Africa ever again!

I'll be touring ZA and will have time for a 4-day tour from Cape Town starting at the end of March... I'd love to do a monthlong ride but this is all I can do at the moment. Hope to hit some dirt north of town and make a loop.

Was going rent from one of the Cape Town bike hire places - if you can recommend one or endorse one please feel free to PM me.

I'll be doing a similar thing in May. I've googled and found three places. None have responded this far. Please let me know what you find out.
