Ridable, campable beaches?

I've had a real hankering to find a beach that I could ride to and camp on. I know there are some beaches on Long Island that allow camping but not on the actual beach. I can ride on the beach in Daytona but who'd want to camp there?

Is the east coast too far gone to allow this sort of thing. Is Mexico the only hope?

Any ideas?

The Outer Banks in NC let's you drive on the beach. Camping is only allowed in certain areas. I love it there, even though I get the GS stuck all the time. The bay side has some beach that is easier to ride on.

Many years ago - Va. Beach Had a Campground on the Beach

Don't reball the name. North end of the strip, main drag bangs a left, go a couple miles, right there. On the water, facilities, etc. Nice, cheap.

Coures, this was cheap 20+ years ago.

Doh ! I got old.

By me , near tampa is Ft. Desoto , you can camp right on the water, not a beach, but near the beach. You can make online reservations at many of florida campgrounds online:

The beach also is consistantly rated as one of the top in the country by
Dr. Beach

Long Key State Park in the Fla Keys- nice camping right on a bonefish flat~ Not much for swimming, tho. Pretty 'spensive, but the sunrise is worth it!

I seem to recall campgrounds in Quebec that were basically sandy beaches.

I'm sure you would have the place to yourself if you went this time of year.

That sounds perfect. Thanks! I've been once before but not on a bike that could hit the beach. This will be a fun warm up for the trip to Europe this summer.

What bike are you taking? A big bike like a GS will wear you out just getting to the hard packed sand near the water. It is possible to do, but VERY DIFFICULT! A street legal dirt bike would be sooo much fun!

Where in Europe are you going?

Sounds like you're talking about Corolla? I driven my truck out on the beach there to fish within the past 10 years. There were (wild?) horses running loose around there. Also down at Oregon Inlet there's beach access and a campground too that is still open for sure. I used to ride/camp down there 'back in the day' on my 81 model Virago. Never tried to make it to the beach on that bike for obvious reasons.

I guess there's no camping at Assateague?

God, I love that photo!

I've just picked up a 950 Adventure so I'm looking for adventures for it. I'm sure riding it two up with loaded panniers onto the beach would be an exercise in futility but that's never stopped me before. It will make for a good dry run for Europe.

My wife and I are going to ship the bike over to Paris in September and ride through France and Spain for 3-4 weeks. For $ reasons and for fun we're going to only camp and we're hoping to find some nice empty roads. She has family there so that's where we'll start but after that we'll follow our intuition or fancy. No plans yet but I'm sure we'll come up with a few waypoints.

Thanks,

Gregor
