Matagami Lake Campground

Our destination for tonight. After fueling in Matagami we started up the James Bay Road. There is security checkpoint where you need to check in and out to use the road. Km 37 is the campground.
Nice facilities. Not much grass for tenting. More of an RV park. Good lake access.

Unfortunate News

Maxbet received a call from his wife to inform him his father had passed away on Sunday,Day 2 of our journey. He turned around and headed for home Monday morning to be with his family. Over 1000 miles from home. It had to be the toughest ride imaginable.

Our deepest sympathy to his family.

Monday Morning

We said our tough goodbye to Karl and wished him well.

We loaded up and headed up the James Bay Road. Along the way is this set of falls. The river here has been diverted for power production but they leave a small amount in the river for the tourists. So we did the tourist thing and took some pictures.

The rain was chasing us a little today as you can see. We stopped to put on our rain gear when we ran into a good rain and as so often happens the rain stopped. Wet roads for awhile but not a big deal.

Gas and lunch

At km 381 is the gas station and cafeteria. Out here the gas is not cheap and neither is the food. Unless you have a 600+ km range on your fuel or you are fasting for some reason you need to stop. This is the only place for either until Radisson.

Lay of the land

The road is "wall to wall" trees for long stretches and gives little chance for looking around. We turned up an access road to a microwave tower and it provided some decent views.

Arrival in Raddison

We arrived in Radisson in the afternoon. There is a visitor center at the edge of town for this busy metropolis of 300 permanent residents. The big draw is the LG2 Hydroelectric Plant. Tours are available. Reservations are needed. The regular tour is 3 1/2 - 4 hours. We opted out on this. Too long for our limited brain activity.

Tuesday

Our hotel is on the main st. We are taking a rest day today and will be here two nights. We decided to ride to James Bay which is about 70 miles from Radisson. 60 paved and 10 dirt. The town of Chisasibi is along the way and is a Native Cree town.

Gas can mount

We told C14XTom that he would need to go 240 miles without a gas stop and this is what he showed up with, pretty cool.

The start of the James Bay Rd.

Last year we rode to Labrador City and we enjoyed ourselves so much we decided to try Quebec again. Ride reports on ADV were a big reason we chose James Bay Rd. We are planning a month long trip to Alaska next year so this is practise. We all know there is a big difference between one week and one month.

Anyone planning to ride here this website is very good. http://www.jamesbayroad.com/jbr/index.html

Tom watching traffic (not much of that) while Jim tries to get that old body of his to slip into his rain gear.
