$126 per night and it was not that nice. We stayed in Labrador City last year and paid about the same, the room was much nicer and they allowed us to put 3 adults in a room. The place in Radisson would only allow 2 per room. There are two other motels in town, they were already full when I called for reservations months ago.

Thanks, sounds like the Yukon and Alaska. Camp or pay the price. And the price ain't so bad when it's pelting down rain.

Dam Tour-Robert Bourassa Reservoir

We had cancelled our reservations for the 4 hour dam tour so we decided to take in the Hydro Quebec visitor center at the employee center. While there an employee approached us and asked if we were doing the tour. We told him no due to the length and we were most interested in the dam and outside facilities. Not as interested in the generation plant. He "insisted" we must see at least part of the tour and arranged a 1 1/4 hour tour with an English speaking guide for the next morning (Wed.) at 7:00. Our thanks to him and our guide Ray.

The visitor center is nice even though the displays are all in French.

Heading South

We had packed up the bikes before the tour so we were quickly on the road. We had not seen a bear on the trip so we did it the easy way and went to the dump south of the airport. Grandpa bear was there for an easy breakfast. I don't have a good pic. Maybe Litespeed can add one.

We did stop to take a pic of an Inukshuk along the road.

Our tour guide Ray

Ray was celebrating his 30th anniversary with Hydro Quebec that day.His father had been a 37 year employee. During construction of the Dam and Power Plant there were 6000 workers here. The Dam is 2 miles long and 550 ft. high. Construction started in 1974 and was completed in 1981. The lake gets approx. 8 ft. of ice in the winter. There are six gates which can release water, three of them are heated so they would be operable in the winter.

A view of the "steps" from the bottom. When they need to release water they open the gates in background and water comes down the spillway steps. This doesn't happen very often.

The "steps" were drilled and blasted and the waste material was used in construction of the dam. For perspective the steps are about 35' high. Some where I read that two football fields would fit on each step.

Uh-Oh

At about km 140 I had my first bit of mechanical trouble. I had punctured a tire. With the help of Litespeed (compressor man) and C14xTom (hose man) we had it plugged and inflated quickly. They may be able to get a Nascar pit crew job.

Of course this was during our second little rain shower of the trip. I kept the rain off the plug and the tire was warm and surprisingly dry. It held for the rest of our trip (1500 miles).

That tire looks worn out, maybe you should have put a new one on for this trip!

Back to Matagami Lake Campground

We had some light rain the rest of the way today. At the campground we waited in a pavilion for the rain to stop to set up camp. About two hours later we had a thunderstorm. In the morning blue skies again.

An unknown fly fisherman trying his luck.

You finally said it. I knew you were thinking it. Glad I didn't. Would rather have that plug in a tire I am throwing away tomorrow.
