Good news! The free GPS tracks are available for download at http://www.utbdr.com/UTBDR-Route-Map

Much of the route is covered in snow right now, but you can now get the tracks and play around with getting them loaded into your GPS unit. You'll be ready for when the snow melts.

A few of the BDR guys will be giving presentations at the "Learning Curve" stage at the New York IMS show held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center from January 20th-22nd.

The presentations will include some video highlights from the UTBDR as well as practical information on planning and riding a Backcountry Discovery Route. They'll even be handing out sample packing lists and BDR stickers. If you make it to the NYC IMS show head to the "Learning Curve" stage to see presentaion schedule for the day.

Thumb Need UTBDR advise for March30-April ride.

I need some advise for this route. *I am looking into possibly riding the route from south to north and would like some more information on the route as well as the difficulty level (areas to look out for), amount of time it typically takes and the best time of year to ride it for better weather. We are looking to leave at the end of this month and take two weeks for the whole trip. *I have a 2011 R1200GSA, and my 18 yo son has a 2009 Kawasaki KLR650, both fully kitted out.
Our experience in the region consists of, in 2010 we rode an ATV and KLX250S on a lot of the mild to moderate trails around Moab, nothing too difficult for a week and have a lot of on road experience on our current bikes, about 15K miles each. **We also have some experience on dirt and gravel fire roads in the tennessee mountains. *
He leaves for the US Airforce in late June, so the trails can't be too difficult as to cause him an injury which would jeopardize his enlistment especially since it would only be us two on the trip with no other logistical support. *Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. *We would be taking two days to ride from central Indiana to Kayenta, AZ to start. *And once at Bear Lake, ID after the route, take two days to ride across the northern states back to Indiana for our last father son trip before he goes into the military.

I need to know if any of the route has spring flooding or washouts, heavy snow, or anything else to plan for that we can take the hardball for that portion of the route if it is indeed washed out or flood prone if it is raining while we are in the area.

I also need advise on tire selection. I have ridden extensively on and off road on my TKC-80s. The rear wears down rather quick on the road but are nice to have on the trails even at half tread. Being that the trip there is a nice distance as well as the trip home from Bear lake, I'm wondering if it would be better to put my Hiedenau K60's on for the whole trip. But would like some more rider confirmation that they will perform similar to the TKC's off road. They seem like they would do well on road due to the chevron pattern and more surface contact.

On this route, are there places along the way near the hardball to stop and get something to eat, or is this the MRE route. Either way is good with me. Just want to be prepared.

Any assistance in all of the above would be greatly appreciated by anyone with an opinion. Thanks guys.

Additional.....

I forgot. I should have the UTBDR specific Butler maps as well as the 5 State BDR route maps and the 5 supporting state maps next week. The DVD is on back order :(.
We both also use Garmin 665s, Garmin GPSMAP 62s handheld units, and a SPOT Connect. We subscribe to the Two is One And One is None theory. Especially when it comes to water, water filters, and other supplies.
Thanks again.
