Felt it my duty to post a link to this thread in "Battle Scooters":
http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=716621 I'm enjoying this very much, including your entertaining observations! Wish I could have done the trip with you, even though... I'm old enough to be your grandfather.

Highway 6 from Tonopah to Ely
Butt burner
the phrase I would use to describe this stretch of the trip. The Great Basin is a series of basins that repeats and repeats and repeats. You enter over a hill and the road stretches straight out to another hill. The occasional curve and large ranch. Maybe some wild horses. No one drives this road. Note to self: great top speed testing location, no cops. But the most important thing on my mind remained gas. I had no idea what kind of mpg I got from this bike. I knew it didn't cost much but other than that I had no idea if I was going to make it to the next gas station 163 miles away. I had extra gallon reserve tank tied to my milk crate and the gallon in the fuel tank but if I only got 80mpg... ![]() Copyright http://www.rocketcityrockcrawlers.com The next 3 hours was basin after basin after basin, beautiful but a little monotonous after a while. I had nowhere to stop so my butt was more sore than usual even with breaks every hour. During one of these breaks I decided to call mom, as was my usual ritual but no cell phone service... There should be some over the next ridge. The next ridge? The next ridge? If my parents didn't hear from me they would freak. They would send out some kind of para rescue squad to comb the deserts for me. Shit, I was still another 3 hours away from Ely and it was already 5pm. That stretch became a race to find cell phone service. Gone was the half throttle and here came full speed 37mph! Maybe 40 on the downhill. I don't really want remember these hours. It consisted of a very painful vibrating seat. I do remember that the valleys got greener, I started seeing houses, a lone mechanics shop, and my worse fear the deer crossing signs. It got dark, I turned on my crappy high beams that were blocked by my front basket anyway and I dodged trucks. I turned on my reserve tank. One of the trucks was coming in fast, and I started to move out of the way, but B let me down, she ran out of gas. Why didn't this thing have a clutch? I was a deer in the headlights, stuck in gear desperately trying to shit down to neutral. Fortunately the truck stopped and I moved out of the way. Whew, close one. I refilled my tank and headed down the road, helped a couple who broke down and was looking for a service station down highway 6. Told them they should probably turn around and head back to find the closest one. After some night riding I eventually came up into Ely...now to find a place to stay. |
