Thanks for supplying the photographs of the XR650L frame, Marko. Here are my ideas for modified Spud Struts.

This is Marko's photograph of the frame from the 7 o'clock position.

Here is my idea for a modified Spud Strut for the right side of the frame.

The front mounting point for my current Spud Strut is bolted through a tab on the bottom of the airbox into a gusset which supports the front mounting point of the muffler, as shown below.

I propose we cut away the plastic tab on the bottom of the airbox, and weld an extension onto the right side of the Spud Strut, so it mounts directly to the gusset. This modification would reduce shear forces on the front mounting bolt.

I propose we keep the rear mounting point for my Spud Strut, which is the bolt hole for the fender subframe. However, I suggest we weld an additional arm onto the Spud Strut which will extend to the bolt hole for the right, rear turn signal.

This is Marko's photograph of the frame from the 5 o'clock position.

Here is my idea for a modified Spud Strut for the left side of the frame.

I propose we keep the front mounting point for my current Spud Strut which is the bolt holder for the front of the battery box.

However, I suggest we change the rear mounting point of my current Spud Strut to the bolt hole for the fender subframe. This mounting point is less likely to interfere with the battery box. I suggest we weld an additional arm onto the Spud Strut which will extend to the bolt hole for the left, rear turn signal.

This design should be very strong, and inexpensive to manufacture. In addition, this design should accommodate all aftermarket mufflers, and the stock battery box as well.

OK Spud I Agree totally

when can you have a prototype ready to send me
OK wrong hole , my x used to say that i never could figure what she meant by that

it would be better for production to be made this way but

then we could add these for xtra strength if and when needed , could even weld bungie loops on there
will this work spud
additionally this way we could get more parts out of a sheet and the shipping would be cheaper

I like your idea, Mike. Making the Spud Stuts a dogleg shape, instead of a Y shape, adds additional, longitudinal strength to the small, weak cantilever at the end of the bike's frame. However, I still believe this weak cantilever needs additional, triangular bracing. Therefore, I propose you add an extra, straight piece of 1/4-inch steel bar which can be bolted to the rear blinker holes and the downward legs on each Spud Strut. These extra, separate bars are colored green in the following photograph.

It would cost very little to ship these two extra pieces, and they would add greatly to the strength of the modified Spud Struts. Of course, you could also weld these extra bars to the Spud Strut doglegs.

You might also consider attaching the front mount of the right Spud Strut to the upper, foot peg bolt, as TT has done. Since the Spud Struts are mounted to the fender subframe bolt, the angle of the right Spud Strut is more vertical than the TT brace. Therefore, you might be able to mount outside the frame to the foot peg bolt, and still accommodate all the aftermarket mufflers.

2 piece design,,,,,,,,bracket at swingarm bolt wraps arround the vertical tube,,and has 2 bolts welded to it.........

The support bolts on there and runs up to the footpeg mount a bolts and bolts there, this strengthens that tube alot.......then it goes up and bolts where the seat bolts on..then bolts at the very rear......all stress relays down to the strongest part of the bike,,,the swingarm mount..

make it so

I`m no designer,,and can barely draw...but bracing off where the passenger pegs mount is just going to break that tube..you need a stronger tube to brace off of..

Look at the large tubes used arround the engine and steering head......and suspension.................now look at the pissy little tubes from there to the back.....this bike was NOT meant to carry anything but a rider and very light passenger...bracing off any of these tubes is a waste of time...

Now,,back to my regular scheduled drinking....

don`t be interupting me neither
