China->Mongolia Trip planning questions
Hi guys. Right now I'm feverishly planning a solo trip from where I live in Xinjiang China all the way through western Mongolia to Khovsgol lake in time for the Naadam Festival. I have a couple questions:
1. How much will it cost for motorcycle import duty? I drive a used 2006 Honda cruiser with 60K km on the odometer. This is a one way trip and I'm planning to sell the bike in Ulaan Baatar when I leave in August. I've heard that import duties are very steep for cars, so I want to have an idea before I get to the border. 2. What documents will I need for my bike to enter the country? Currently I have the following, are any missing? - Chinese bike insurance - Chinese driver's license - International driver's license - Chinese Vehicle registration/inspection info And if anyone has further suggestions on Mongolia please let me know, or point me to threads that can. Thanks! :) |

Hi
As suggested on my RR that you posted on, try browsing/searching/asking on http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/northern-asia/ There's much more traffic than here. The answer to your questions: 23%, although they'll let you in on a Temporary Import Permit for 0 money. To get the bike in, you'll need bike reg docs and your passport (both in your name?), although they don't write the bike into your passport. There may be a picture of a car on the stamp, but that's to say you arrived in/on a vehicle, rather than an aeroplane. You could just as easily have been on a bus/ hitchhiking in a truck.
