It's a beautiful home, indeed. By all accounts Sidna Allen was a perfectionist in pretty much anything he laid his hands one.

There's a lot of history in this particular history, and to this day the subject of the Courthouse Massacre is seldom broached in public in this county, out of concern of riling up an ancestor of one of those involved in the shooting. On the one hand, a hundred years is a lot of time. On the other, it happened only a couple of generations ago, and people up here in the mountains are slow to forget.

Here's a link with some pertinent info; there's much on the 'net about it all. A person could write an entire book on this subject...and several have.

Take care,
Ferris

Wrap around porch

FB1,

Any home with a wrap around porch is cool in my book. Not a deck, but a real porch. That is one cool home. Almost a shame to see it deteriorating like that. Potential, lots of it.

It's a damn shame, brother. I walked around the entire house and was shocked at all the rot I saw; there are dozens of places where rainwater from the roof is not being managed properly and is taking its toll. I didn't take any "detail" photos of the house; I couldn't bring myself to do so.

If I had a million dollars..................

More from yesterday's Fog. Rain. Ride. This is the view from 2159 Indian Valley Post Office Road. I've got my rain gear on now. I'd watched the radar loops this morning, and knew it was coming. Might as well suit up before it gets here. And it's almost here.

The Indian Valley Post Office, I discovered, is a full-service post office:

~~~
The rain began in earnest as I angled for colorful photographs in an otherwise dreary Indian Valley and my camera didn't see the light of day again for the next three hours, as I slogged my way towards Salem and the warm, dry, caffeinated comfort of Starbucks. Indian Valley Road is a peach when it's dry, not so much on a gray, wet, gloomy day that was more and more reminding me of late November rather than the middle of August. By and by I jumped on I-81 northbound, just to make some time; not having much fun at this point, might as well just get 'er done. The spray from the big rigs put a quick end to that and I veered right on Highway 11, the Robert E. Lee Highway, wanting to slow the pace back down and get away from traffic again. Much better now, but still grim and determined. I sniffed for photo ops here and there, but nothing came to life in the dull, leaden grayness. At Starbucks I left a trail of water to my table. I never did take off my rain pants; they had failed badly, again, and I didn't need people pointing and giggling. I pulled up radar on my phone. Hmmmm, this is gonna take a while. Mocha grande, please, no whip, 180 degrees, blueberry scone, nuked to perfection, a quick ping to Denise to let her know where I was, catch up on BadWeB and ADVrider, and study my paper-based GPS and scheme the next leg. The Norfolk Southern locomotive shop at Shaffer's Crossing in Roanoke sounded like potential photographic fun.
But first: Dry out some, warm up some, and geez, what the heck, lay my head down on the table and take a frikkin' power nap. When you get to be my age (and get up at 0430 on an otherwise perfectly dreadful Sunday morning just to go riding) you'll very much value your naps. Trust me on this.
Sweet dreams, YFF. When you wake up, it will still be raining.
I made my way to Shaffer's Crossing in Roanoke. It finally stopped raining, and although I didn't get any great photos, it was still cool to be around so many locomotives, many of them idling. I saw one loco pulled from the roundhouse out onto the table, spun around, and pushed back into a different service bay, which was all pretty cool, but no pix of this sequence as I was trying to fly under the radar and not get escorted out of the place. Like I said, nothing much to see here...unless you're an incurable railfan.
Okay, that would suck on a Uly. Its hard enough to putt around between 1800-2000mph on the Uly, but 9.5mph speed limit. I would be in constant trouble.
