I'm getting dizzy just reading those directions from my office chair! I didn't see it, so I'm gonna ask: Did you ride OH Rt. 26 from Woodsfield to Marietta? Did that last week and was mighty pleased. Followed the next morning by WV Rt. 47 from Parkersburg to Linn. Nice surprise!!
Thanks for the info and the pics! Please keep it coming.

I'll post the track map tonight, I have to hook up the laptop to the GPS which is out on the bike in the parking lot.

I finally (after a LOT of searching out of hidden and non obvious settings) have the Quest nicely dialed in such that I don't have to devote a dangerous amount of attention to it.

It is rigged so that at any moment I can glance at the screen and see (to the right of the map) three big icons... The first is an arrow that tells me what I have to do next (gentle right, hard right, hairpin right, hard left, etc). The second tells me how many miles (or fractions of a mile) until I have to do it. The third is how many minutes or seconds until I have to do it (at my current speed). The GPS also changes view completely when I am within .2 miles of the thing I have to do, which also attracts my attention (it also beeps, but I don't have speakers hooked up to hear that).

Now that this is all dialed in and set up, I find it *safer* than not having a GPS at all. Without the GPS I would struggle mightily to read street signs constantly and look for intersections to make sure I am not about to blow through a critical turn. It ends up a dangerous division of my attention margin between making sure I don't get off route and scanning for threats. How many times have you almost rear ended a car because you were trying to read a street sign?

This way, I glance for literally a 1/2 a second, and know exactly if I need to worry about doing something or not, and know how long until I have to worry about it. Then I resume my attention scanning for threats for the 3.8 miles (or whatever) until I have to look for my turn. And if I do blow through a turn I am supposed to make, I don't have to worry about it, as I won't be "lost", it will be clear I need to get back on track when I do get a safe moment to check the GPS.

JB and Ferris, you might have noticed I signaled the next turn *precisely* .2 miles before we had to make it every time. This does not mean I knew where we were, it just means the GPS knew where we were going. :)

One last shot from the weekend. This is JB2 heading out early Sunday morning from our motel in Wheelersburg, Ohio, getting ready to fast-track it back to Indiana. Frikkin' cold it was and I was in no hurry to roll (I had cleverly left my Gerbings heated gear at home - heavy sigh...), but JB2 was itching to get some wind on him and left under the cover of darkness.

My goal was to reach Starbucks in Huntington, West Virginia before the onset of hypothermia. I made it with just moments to spare. :-)

09/30/2012: Château Morrisette Winery

It was postcard-pretty on the Blue Ridge yesterday. Denise and I ended up at Château Morrisette Winery.
