Sad fiddler

FB1,

I figgered it out... the guy is playing a carbon fiber fiddle. WTF? Hell, I'd be unhappy too.

A line from a Steel Wheels tune; "let the strings move the wood"

Take that guy a wooden fiddle and watch the crowd go crazy.

Weather has been ridiculous this year. We had a check of a storm last night, another one this afternoon and another is brewing yet again tonight. This weekend isn't looking too good for a ride up the hill either. Let's hope for a very fall!

I've never seen a carbon fiber violin before, though apparently popular with some touring musicians. Suppose it helps with tuning in different environments and maybe electrification. i think Zeta used to make synthetic basses without a headstock and really small bodies. Never played one though.

Yeah, I think you may be onto something!

Steel Wheels, you say? Geez, easily one of our favorite bands ever! Thanks for the opportunity to showcase them a little bit.

I am no stranger to pain and I know it will come
We're familiar with some
But we're young
And we hope
and we should
Let the strings move the wood
Let the strings move the wood...

Man, no kiddin' on the ridiculous weather! Quiet and (relatively) cool up here today, for a change, but I went outside and watched your/our storm last night from under the eaves. It was just light enough to see the trees dancing in the wind, and the lightning was incredible. We have had So. Much. Frikkin.' Rain!!!

I think JB2 has a point - c/f belongs on Ducati's, not fiddles!

Two more from the Steel Wheels. These guys are SO good:

JB2: That's Trent Wagler's Grandpa in the "Red Wing" video earlier. Trent says his gramps passed on his love of music to him at an early age. As his grampa got older Alzheimer's started taking a toll, but whenever the fellas in the band would visit him and start playing, Gramps' eyes would sparkle again, he'd flash that smile you see in the video, and start playing along with his harmonica.

The music still burned in Grampa, even though everything else was shutting down. The music was still alive in him.

Trent wrote the following song for his Grandpa; not sure I've ever told you this story before. He shared it with us by way of an introduction when we saw them perform at Snowshoe a couple of years ago. There wasn't a dry eye in the house at the end of the song.

As a Baptist...

Quote:
Baptist churches are common around these parts, but you don't often see them "competing" like this:
Baptists joke about "church splits" as it keeps us from crying.

A favorite joke is about the Baptist that was shipwrecked alone on a deserted island. A year later he was rescued by a passing ship. When they picked him up the captain of the ship asked him about the three huts that were on the beach. "The one on the left is my church. It's where I worshiped," he said. "The one in the middle is my home," he added. "It's where I lived." "What's the one on the right," the captain asked. "Oh," he said, "that's my former church."

(I said it was a favorite, not that it was funny.)

Your photographs, on the other hand, are wonderful.

Good one, made me laugh out loud!

There be plenty of Baptist churches here in the mountain south, that's for sure. So from what you're saying, it won't be long until there's a another Saddle Mountain Baptist Church variant popping up beside the Parkway??

My first ride up the entire length of the Parkway was with JB2 on the "Out of Words" ride back in the fall of '04. I was gobsmacked by the beauty of the Parkway, of course, and we could barely make any forward progress because I was stopping to take photos so often.

I remember chuckling when I saw the two Baptist churches sitting side by side just off the Parkway, and of course had to stop and document the "competing" churches:

Thanks for riding along, Liberia.

Pretty cool: It looks like the foot of the kickstand is touching the exact same spot.

I scooted to the beer and brats thing they had at Chateau Morrisette yesterday. Pretty big turnout FWIW.
A little late to the party but if I had known about this early on, would have put the projects on hold. Beer and brats right up my alley.

Enjoying the Parkway from the screen though. Thanks for the ride sweetie.

Dance Me Around The Room

FB1,

Yeah, that's the tune brother! Can't say enough about Steel Wheels. Best new music gift I've had in ages(Thanks D!). So good in fact that the grooves are nearly worn off the CD. We get down to Trent's hometown at least twice a year hunting geodes and fossils but have never seen the band... yet.

It's time to make "Spokes & Strings" a reality. If we started planning now...

Hymn For The Unsung

Dude, I can't even listen to the song without choking up. Yes you did tell me the story. Knowing the backstory and having lost a Grandparent to "Old Timers" just drives the power of the song even closer to home...

On the other side... "Spokes & Strings"

We don't know how many days we have. Like Dave Barr says, "You only get the dash in the middle." We have Malcolm Holcombe playing at our home on September 27th. His wife Cyndi says she can hook us up with several regional performers who prefer doing small venues. Maybe our time is now? I've got the entire Winter & next Summer open for planning and logistics. It might be the perfect transition from Big Jim's Ride. Just thinking out loud...
