11-26/27-2011: "Weekend Wandering" Rides

Nothing epic this weekend, just wandering around close to home, doing our best to work the fading daylight and weather conditions this time of year. I needed something for the Road King, so Saturday morning me 'n Dnutz took aim on Tilley Harley-Davidson in Statesville, North Carolina, USA.

I first met Don Tilley in 1997 at the American Sportbike Festival in Willow Springs, California, USA. This was a Buell American Motorcycle BRAG-sponsored dealio. Don was sponsoring Shawn Higbee in the Pro Thunder series, and they raced at Willow that weekend. Don and Shawn were the guests-of-honor at the BRAG supper that night, and fielded questions from the Buell faithful afterwards, very much a treat for us all.

Ya can't not love Don Tilley, and I was hoping we might get a chance to visit with him on Saturday; Dnutz had not yet had the pleasure of meeting him. Don is just coming off knee surgery, but was back working the dealership even before he could walk, and so I wasn't too surprised to see him floating around on Saturday, but it was way cool when he walked up to the parts counter while we were grabbing our stuff and we all had a chance to visit for a spell.

I asked him if he'd mind a quick photo with us by the Road King, and he was kind enough to say yes, accompanied by a big smile. We thanked him for his time, and he said, "Heck, I'm just flattered that someone wants a picture of this ugly ol' mug!"

Thanks Don, you rock!!

We made a command on-the-fly decision to head for Siloam Road on the return run from Statesville,
based on bluegrss' recommendation a bit earlier in this thread. Here we are arriving in his hometown:

We spied this gorgeous little '52 outside a body shop as we pulled into Boonville:

And, I assume, the shop responsible for building the '52:

Based on bluegrss' recommendation...

It was fun to see the Siloam Community again, this time from a bit different perspective ingress/egress-wise, and to show Dnutz several of the moto-treasures (including the Reeves Homestead) I'd discovered on my visit two weeks ago:

We ended up at our favorite watering hole, the Lone Star in Mount Airy, North Carolina, USA
and wetted our whistles. Katie, the coolest bar-babe in the world, works there and always treats me 'n D like family.
If you ever stop in, please tell her Ferris & Denise said howdy.

Razorback

Ferris,

I started the reply before I read the text below. Guess you didn't figger I'd let this one slip anyways, eh? I've never called a razorback with a pig call, a person may get more than he bargained for.

I also noticed your lysdexia photo. Hey, I reassemble that marker. Leave me looney okay?

Sunday dawned pretty much junk up here on the Parkway, with drippy zero-zero fog and big wind. I was up and ready to roll before daybreak, but held off for an hour or so to see what daylight might bring in the way of relief. Still nasty, but I had a day pass and was itching to ride.

I put out a couple of feelers for riding partners, but ended up going solo today. Once I dropped outta the mountains the whole world changed, sunny and warm and pretty, and I managed to knock out 150 miles or so of casual adventuring down on the Piedmont.

I spent an hour or so in Danbury, North Carolina USA, soaking up the warmth and angling for photographs. Quiet, pretty and peaceful. Win, win and win.
