If one were to purchase a new 2013 690R, is it possible to ride away and just ride it as is and be happy or are there must do mods to enjoy this bike?

The only thing I am aware of, and this all 2nd hand, is the stock can with the cat runs very hot and can melt plastic or the left turn signal. I bought mine used with a good list of aftermarket stuff that makes it better, but not really mandatory.

Thanks! So the bike and a slip on exhaust and I'm good? Quietest one? I leave at 4 in the AM for work. And does that require a remap? As soon as this damn snow melts, I'll be headed to check one out in person.

You will be fine to ride as-is.

The stock exhaust is quiet, and does give off some serious heat. I have 1,500 miles on my 2012 Enduro R with stock exhaust so far and I am still getting to know the bike.

Put a few miles on the bike first, then build up a budget for the following:

$450 Wings exhaust
$100 Upper & Lower Tank Bolts from Rally Raid
$700 Scotts SubMount Steering Stabilizer with Rubber Mount
$150 Seat Concepts seat cover

Picked up some Orange Bling for my Ginger.


Includes a custom Eibach spring to handle my lard arse.

Almost everyone changes the seat as the stocker is a plank for long rides.

+1 re' seat - very pleased with the Seat Concepts foam and cover.

The stock handuards crack at the first knock (mine did anyway) and the plastic engine guard is not very convincing ...

I wouldn't leap into a new exhaust, but if you do then get an aftermarket air filter to go with it - the KTM Akropovic map assumes that you have both, and the bike doesn't run well with only the Akro (or equivalent) ...

What do you weigh and what spring rate did you get?

I'm ~230 and each of the shops that I spoke with recommended a 90nm/mm but I found it too soft... I bought a 95nm/mm (I believe this is a ~550lb/in 2.5 I.D. x 10" as used in truck/ buggy applications) and barely noticed a difference and had nearly identical sag numbers. I've been considering buying yet another spring but taking a bigger leap to something in the 105-110 nm/mm range.

I've already had the shock revalved and added a lot to the compression side and I'm not sure if running an even heavier stack is the answer or if running a heavier spring will have similar effects in increasing bottoming resistance.

My son is installing the shock for me tonight. I weigh in at about 300 fully geared up. Head of the Chunky Boy club. I believe they did 106nm spring rate. I too am running the stock .52 in the front for now.
I have .48 in my 525 forks. They feel great. I run a 75-91 spring in the rear of my 525.
This is my first experience with this suspension builder. He has a great rep locally. Generally seems to believe in letting the spring do much of the work and use the shim stack for tuning. My forks I copied the setup from my 525 into this bike. Nice and plush. I won't know til this weekend how the front & rear with cooperate with each other.

I've read for months now on the 500EXC and the 690R. I waffle back and forth between the two. Realistically, the 690 makes more sense for me. Waiting for the snow to melt so I can go touch one in person. I'm a big guy at 6' 2", 230 so the weight isn't an issue. I just want to sit on one and make sure it "feels" right. Nice to know I can ride it stock and be happy too!

Upper Tank Bolt removal

Those that have removed their broken upper tank bolts, what is the easiest way to do this?

Seems like it will be easiest if I disconnect the opposite side and pivot the tank out of the way in order to drill a hole in the broken bolt to allow the use of an easy out bolt extractor.

I have put this off for far too long. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I went through roughly the same process to arrive at the 690. What settled it for me was the maintenance intervals and engine reliability. Anytime you have what is essentially a race bike with lights, and a small oil capacity, you need to consider how often you want to mess with it versus just ride it. So if you need to do much transportation riding...putting non-dirt miles on it, the 690 is probably the best. The diff between the two is about 50 lbs which sounds like a lot unless you are accustomed to most street bikes where 475 lbs is light. Just my 2 cents.

475 is light????? My Gixxer is porky at 425 LBS.

Well then you've got a light bike...sorta. My GS's are both 475. The Ducati a bit less. All more than a KTM 500 or the 690. So your 425 lb Gixxer is a pig or a fairy, depending. It's all relative....my only point.
