This all started with a For Sale ad in the Regional Flea Market section right here on ADV when this R80G/S-PD was offered up in Revelstoke, BC.
![]() Well, actually it started before that. It started back in April when my wife and I decided she needed to visit her folks in Winnipeg and sister in Vancouver so they could all spend a little time together with our young son. Naturally, with two weeks on my hands sans wife and child, we both thought a motorcycle trip might be a fine way for me to fill my time without supervision. So I began planning a riding and camping trip into some of the more remote regions of Northern Ontario... and that's when I saw the ad for this bike and it made me go "Hmmmmnnnn.... If I flew out there I could see a whole lot of Canada in half the time it'd take if I had to ride both ways. Hmmmmmnnn?" Sort of the appeal of *Vermin's one-way tripping, but with a twist. ![]() ![]() *What? You don't know who Vermin is?!? |

And so, on the strength of one picture, I pm'd Pete (rtw02) within a half hour of him posting his ad and told him I'd take the bike, no questions asked. We finally caught up with one another via the phone and worked out the details. That was April 29. I flew out to meet Pete in Kelowna on the 13th of July, the same day my wife left for Winnipeg and her folk's place with our boy.
Pete very graciously offered to meet me in Kelowna at 10pm and drive me to their home in Revelstoke 2-1/2 hours away. I suggested taking the bus the following morning, but he'd have none of it. Arriving in Revelstoke I was greeted by the R80G/S-PD looking even better than the pictures suggested. Excited about the coming adventure in one of my favourite parts of Canada, but tired and three hours behind the local time, I layed down for the night in Pete and Carol's luxurious spare room. ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz... Next morning, awakened by the sun at 0500, I enjoyed a spectacular Rocky Mountain view from their living room window while Pete prepared coffee and breakfast. Pete then showed me around his shop before heading off to work leaving me with the run of the place to get the bike set up the way I wanted for the trip ahead. Nice guy, that Pete. ![]() A little side note about Pete and his wife Carol: Pete's ADV handle - rtw02 - refers to the Round The World trip they took in '02 on their well-traveled '83 R80RT. These folks are serious about their motorcycle travel. ![]() |

So I set about attaching a Pelican box camera case to the back rack in the most precarious of cantalevered arrangments completely mindful that it might cause some grief down the road. It didn't disappoint. And stripping all the bodywork off the bike I carefully chased down every electrical connection I could find for cleaning, deoxidising and coating with dielectric grease. Didn't want any annoying electrical problems caused by bad grounds or furry spade clips. No, not me. More on this later.
Hey, what's that funny noise coming from the road below? Haven't heard anything like that in years. And what's that weird smell? Did someone leave their leaf blower running? ADV's very own Annony and his killer custom Kawasaki 750 triple. |
