A day ride to Mount Merapi Volcano a couple months after the eruption

This is a ride to the mount merapi volcano situated in the heart of central java.

This was taken at least two months after the major volcanic eruption hit central java and sterilizing a radius of 20 km from the peak and evacuating about a total of 50.000 people and killing about 100. I forget the right numbers but it should be about right.

Started om the my parents house which is only 22 km from the peak of the volcano. must go early in the morning because if you wake up late then you cannot see the volcano.

My friends who lives 6 km from the peak will become my guide to the volcano to find some good ride tracks.

Im using my Kawasaki KLX 150s and my friend is using a small Honda Scooter

Arriving at the my firns house about 6 in the morning - ready to go drink hot tea first then start to ride. going through the village to enter the site.

It is green and bushy but then the evidence of volcanic eruption is clear treas falling and burnt every where. it is good that the air has wash most of the volcanic ass away from the leaves. At the beginning it was all white like snow.

We reach the bridge that will lead to another village but beyond the village to roads has gone.

Gone to another route which is the main path of the lava flow. Farm land and plantation just covered in lava flow and ash. A couples of villages total destroyed.

Near the peak there are people selling foods and drinks. They are victims who lost there homes in the eruptions and now sell food and drinks to tourist who want to see the location of the lava flow.

since it is getting hot time to go back down from the volcano. 3 km from the peak is the furthers a motorbike can go up. if you want to go higher then you would have to walk.

Thats for now i will upload the photos ASAP!

volcano damage

Super RR!
That is one damaged area. At the same time you did a fine job at building interest in the area & desire in riding the volcano.
Is it possible to climb to the rim & look into the crater of the volcano?

WELL DONE

No it is not possible to look into the crater or even reach the side of the rim. You would have to hike up the slope of the volcano I have been to the 3rd and final post but that is still 1km from the peak. It took me 3 hours to walk up.

Need to have a dam good motorbike and balls to go beyong the 3km range. Up to the challange?

Oke thanks for the comment :)

One of my rides at night I passed through a small town linking yogyakarta and magelang called jumoyo. It is one of the worst hit by cold lava. It occured months after the eruption during the rainy season. The cold lava crushed houses markets and even cut the main road between the two cities.

Bring the photos as soon as possible during the night ride passeed the city. I will try to get the pictures during day light if a pass another time.

It is a 30 minute ride from jogjakarta.

Cheers

Travel back in time to the 2006 eruption

This eruption occurred at 2006 these photos are dug out of the collection for to share with others. You can see the different and damaged compared to the 2010 eruptions.

That time i used a small Honda Impressa 100cc and accompanied with my girlfriend who eventually became my wife he he he :)

The causalities of the eruption 2 people who died in one of the underground bunkers which was under 5 meters of lava.

The damage eventually become a lava tour for people to visit

hope you enjoy a blast from the past of the after math of the 2006 eruption of mount merapi.

Cheers :)
