Pinewood Derby Car and Trophy

We had another fast car this year -- the Webelo car. Just finished racing -- 1st place in the den.

And the cars from Tiger, Wolf, and Bear years, plus the Webelo car. All cars were 1st place in den. Several were also 1st place in Pack and one was 1st place in region -- the gold one

We've had a lot of fun with this. My son counts these cars among his most prized possessions. He's all about the special "tricks" -- all legal -- extended wheel base, lightweight front end, 5 oz almost all above rear wheels, polished axles, polished wheels (rounded on small hand lathe), tons of graphite, and a few "warm-up" races on a piece of plastic track. His favorite part is spray painting the small plastic driver silver each year. As he says -- his trademark.

Next year we'll see if he'll be willing to attach a teeney tiny ADV sticker (as suggested here) for a bit of extra speed!

Elks Lodge plus ATV ride with Mom

Zuma is great for doing errands around town on nice days. At the Elks Lodge to take care of some administrative stuff for Cub Scouts.

Close-up:

Also saw this guy in the bushes.

Out with Mom and Dad on ATVs. Here's Mom above the Virgin River Gorge.

Mom's great on an ATV. Always up for an adventure! Nice and windy up on top.

I really enjoy your posts/pics. Having been on most of these roads, they jog many good memories!!
This pic made me smile, I took the same pic from the Walmart in Washington with my phone.(apparently at about the same time)

Uncanny photos

Hey 413.45 --

Yeah, the cloud cover in those photos is pretty similar. I remember it was a striking day. Thanks for posting.

Checked out your thread on "Quintuple Black" on your GS. Very sharp. Also your threads on Pat Tillman Bridge and AZ Strip.

Perhaps we'll have to get a few inmates together once the days get longer (no mud) and ride out to Toroweap? Or a pavement ride up to Kolob Reservoir and/or Zion?

Not sure how many inmates are consistently in/around St. George, but probably some interest.

Sunshine after Snow

Clear skies today after a few days of storms. Rain in St. George, but snow at slightly higher elevations all around. Out on the Versys for a mid-day spin up Old 91 (Utah hill).

Dusting of snow on red cliffs. Ivins Reservoir, near Kayenta.

Summit of Old 91.

Coming back down. Road mostly clear except a few curves with shade.

Summit of West Mountain Peak obscured by clouds.

The other mirror, looking back up the road.

Gorgeous scenes all around. Lots of bikes and ATVs heading out. Thanks for checkin' in. Ride safe!

Southwest Utah Inmates?

Hey DirtReeper --

I've never done House Rock Valley Road (on moto). Certainly would be a good loop with 89 and 89a and back to Kanab. Lots of great riding in that area. Would like to do Cottonwood Canyon Road (again) and Skutumpah Roads also.

Have been to the Wave several times. Here's a photo from December.

Do you work in the St. George BLM office or the Kanab office?

Agree on organizing a few inmate rides in Southwest Utah. Definitely some interest. Any others???

Good options might be Toroweap (dirt) or Kolob Reservoir (pavement). Endless possibilities. Best to wait until the days get a bit longer and the temps come up a bit. Although we are currently fine for the lower elevations. Was out today. Very pleasant in the mid-60s.

Throw a pic of yourself (or your bike) up here. Other locals also welcome. Ride safe, ride often.

Smokey Mountain road

One of my favorite roads in Utah is the Smokey Mountain road.
On this ride we had come all the way from the Mexico border on dirt,
and went all the way to Canada---then rode back a different way.

Starts off like this for just a bit.

This is a very long route through here----be very prepared as there is nothing and maybe no one
out here to help you. It is an extremely beautiful ride-----extremely. I'm going to guess it's almost 90 miles of dirt
between Page, AZ and Escalante, Utah. We saw not one living soul out here--just us and the wind.

Intitially we had to slop thru this right as we got on smoky mountain road....
but never saw anymore of mud this bad.

But most of it is like this.

I'm going to guess we have climbed up on top of Smoky Mtn. in this picture.
It's elevation is 5,761ft.
This is looking back the way we came.

Quite a few mountain switch backs----one of the most beautiful and remote rides I've ever done.

AT one point we were on top of a high plateau and could ride very fast--------if we wanted to.

If your bike weighs more than 400lbs. You might not make it.

Thanks, Mark.

Yeah -- Smokey Mountain Road Scenic Backway from Big Water, UT (near Page, AZ) to Escalante, UT. Haven't done it yet. Definitely on the list. Awesome! As you say -- gorgeous and remote. Good combination.

Like the graphic on your bike, BigDog!

My other favorite route in Utah---was on the same Mexico to Canada ride me and my buddy did 2 years ago.

It really caught us off guard for sure----I've ridden a lot of Utah---and wore out the Moab area years ago----and this road called "The Skylne Drive" was awesome. From the name I pictured pavement with a stream of motor homes and was leery of even riding it. Boy were we in for a surprise.

I'm talking 90 miles above 10,000 ft. almost all the time of just dirt---------and...............snow.

We went under interstate 70 at mile marker 73 on a dirt road. It briefly started out as Convulsion road and we were immediately treated to this stone water fall.

You only go North about 15 miles and get on "The skyline Drive" and pass this sign------we had been loosely trying to follow the Great Western Trail---which sometimes is a mystery just where it goes.

This is pretty much how most of it looks -----not hard riding at all really---for small bikes anyway.

We were told by some other riders up there----that just 3 days before we got there it was impassable with deep snow---and this was in July---I think.

Just miles and miles of this high ridge.

We met these 2 cowboys out there-------these guys are true cowboys and were responsible for a large herd out there.
And they were a hoot. They told us how lucky we were out riding our bikes wherever we wanted ---and just winging it to wherever------we just had to say---------"Yeh,,,,,,,we know"

We finally came down to this----and I was just estatic and couldn't take it anymore.
Way to much fun.

What I want to point out about this route----I was astounded how it didn't look like the typical Utah red rock terrain I'd been use to in Utah---I had to pinch myself and remind myself I was in Utah.

Give me a "heads up" if you're ever in the area. Local inmates -- any interest in the occasional ADV ride?

Longer days and warmer weather are fast approaching. Ride safe and ride often. Thanks again to all.
