I think R3's thread is the defacto St George adv group ride thread anyway. Wish I could make it!

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.

Hey RRR - AWESOME thread, with great info !

Will be in St George May 9-15 and sent you PM re
some routes.

Do you think the higher elevation stuff will be
clear of snow ?

Utah traffic cams near Cedar Break show snow
on the side of the roads...

Snow Situation

I'll let RRR give you the details, but the Snotel sites show that below 9,000 ft most of the snow is all gone. Up near 10,000 there's still going to be snow when you show up the first week of May. This winter there wasn't much snow compared to average, but it's still pretty high and cold and they just got another small batch this last weekend up there. There's plenty of country to see at elevations lower than 9,000 ft though. I've seen snow on the sides of that road (on top) 5' deep in June after real wet winters.

Been running out of Hurricane for the last few days (after fighting wind and snow in I15 to get here). No bike, just the Jeep, but we are finidng plenty of back country roads.

Questions for locals, are there any good paper maps of this country around Hurricane and over by St. George? Can't find anything locally (Hurricane), but will be going to St. George today where I tracked down a couple of Benchmark Atlas books for both AZ and UT at an out door store. I've found them to be great resources back north. I have BaseCamp with appropriate state Topos but would like the BM Atlas for backup and information.

Arizona Strip Map

At the BLM field office ask for the Arizona Strip Visitor map, It cuts off just north of Hurricane, so you won't get the country up around Zion, but everything south of there to the Grand Canyon is shown.

Picked up the Utah Benchmark and the BLM Strip Visitor map at the Desert Rat outdoor store and found the Arizlona Benchmark map at Barnes and Noble so now we are good on maps. Thanks for all the input. (This would be so much better on 2 wheels).

Off the Grid

Thanks guys for picking up the slack. I went off the grid for the last few days, mostly in the Zion backcountry (overnights) and a few long day hikes. Enjoying some time with Dad. Trying to take full advantage of retirement.

Been busy with family back in town . . . just haven't had the chance to keep up with all my inmate correspondence.

A few pics from the Zion backcountry with Dad.

RingoKelly - a few pics from our Elbow Canyon ride coming. Good times even though you were on a green bike, not orange.

DirtyJohnny - thanks for PM. Welcome back to St. George. I'm riding moto support for the Ironman on Saturday, then busy with family on Sunday. Week of May 5th has some flex. We'll get it organized.

ElleDubs - thanks for you PM. I'll PM you back some details. Can't do the ride on Sunday, 5/4. Enjoy that loop, big adventure. Have fun riding bike support in front of the lead woman runner. I'll look for you.

AccelRus MaxiMus - the dirt road above Kolob Reservoir is very likely still full of snow. Might want to rethink that part of your route. I'll PM you a few more thoughts.

Thanks to others for helping out -- Samthg, notsofasteddie, StG -- and nice to see all the friends --- Simba, MudClod, NSFW, Wansfel.

Moto Support: 2014 St. George Ironman 70.3

Third year of riding moto support for St. George Ironman. Same deal as prior years. Carried the same photographer. He works primarily for city of St. George so he is most interested in getting pics in the city and in Snow Canyon.

Pic of the men leaders on Red Hills parkway above St. George. Overall winner is the guy in red on the lead bike. Think he was in 2nd or 3rd place at this point. Very inspirational to see how fast these guys are going.

The 70.3 format is very successful for St. George. Lots of world class athletes and broad participation. Lots of community support, and lots of media coverage and technology. Here is a drone with camera hovering over the Dixie sign.

Drone in action.

And the drone safely back on the ground.

Spent most of our time in Snow Canyon State Park covering the steepest part of the bike course. My photographer is taking pics on the side of the road. We also spent a lot of time shadowing some of the more colorful riders. No pics of that since I was driving.

Photographer doing his thing.

My pic of some of the age-group men on a steeper part of the climb.

Excellent motivational signs all along the road in Snow Canyon.

In town at T2, the transition from bike to run.

Later in the day, back out at the top of Snow Canyon. These athletes take a different approach with the hill. Still, hats off to every participant. Lots of smiles and applause, all deserved.

Best scene of the day. Back in town square near the finish line. Athletes celebrate and cool down in the fountain with dozens of kids. Lots of joy and happiness. Don't miss it if you are a local.

A few other inmates may have been riding moto support also. Post up a pic if you have one.

St. George will be looking for more moto volunteers for the Ironman 70.3 next year. Especially looking for larger, quiet bikes with riders comfortable with 2-up in tight traffic situations. Good times.

My sister was writing numbers and stripping wetsuits off all of the hard bodies out at Sand Hollow Reservoir this morning. Sorry . . . no pics. But she said it wasn't bad either.
