Mmmmm? Yesterday? Been on SPD's since they came out. I even once put a set of Looks on an old Stumpjumper years ago. Have also tried Crank Bros. no thanks. Must be a lack of talent. I've been riding since 1981 when I bought a used bike supposedly made by Charlie Kelly and Tom Ritchie that looked like it came straight off Repack Rd, and took it to Alta and later Moab. No one there had ever seen one. Lots of strange looks. I've eaten it 10:1 on my mtn bikes to dirt bikes since then.

Kinda random and not hardcore MTB. I am thinking of buying one of these for the GF for xmas this year. She has been a urban roadbiker for a couple years and everytime the we ride together we keep having to avoid when the trail turns to dirt. This seems like a cost effective entry level bike...
http://www.airbornebicycles.com/products/111-sabre.aspx Any other suggestions? I like the price point and components. For an xmas gift its gotta be brand new.

Looks good to me. Nice frame, mechanical disc brakes, and most of all....the right size wheels. I've certainly seen worse bikes for twice the price. It's shocking how much bike you can get for the money these days.

yeah they are kind of an offbrand that is owned by... gasp... huffy!
Just curious if anyone had experience. I would prefer to get a bike with a lockout for the versatility but the price is right on this as a gift.

Any reason for that? For $250-$300 you could probably get a decent sugar/homegrown/jamis/whatever Craigslist find. I understand it probably won't see a ton of miles, but I always feel like that acera/tourney parts group is basically made to fall apart.
Can't beat the price! |

i hear ya and for my personal use that would be one thing. I have learned my lesson with used gifts for gf's years ago, no matter how mint they always know its a CL find.

I've had friends who rode Airborne bikes and beat the holy living hell out of them without any issues. The components are certainly on the lower end, but they'll be fine in the short term and are easily upgraded when they wear out (if they wear out before she tumbles down a mountainside and decides she's not into it). I ran mechanical disc brakes for years without issue, and actually preferred them to hydraulic discs because of lower maintenance.

For that price range I would definitely go used. Heck I would go used up to $1500. With bicycles you get way more used unless you get pro deals.

If you come riding in Rifle, bring your own gun...
This happened to a friend of mine. He left his bike behind a tree for 10-20 min to do a little hike and this is what happened. Fucked up. "Shot bike: Deputies responded to a criminal mischief in the area of the JQS Trail and Hubbard Mesa outside Rifle on Nov. 25 at 5:02 p.m. and learned that a man who had been mountain biking and had left his bike. When he returned from his hike, the bike had been shot multiple times." |
