Garmin Nuvi - Crashes trying to Import Route From File

Good Morning, all. I'm having a fair amount of trouble with my Garmin Nuvi 550.

I've created a route (with only 16 via points) in BaseCamp for Mac and transferred it to my Nuvi. But...every time I try to "Import Route From File," the Nuvi crashes. I've read that many of you have experienced this problem (and heard confirmation of said issue from Garmin themselves), but I wanted to refresh the discussion and see if any solution has been developed.

I.e., will using BaseCamp for Windows avoid this?
Do I need to create the routes in BaseCamp -> export to RoadTrip -> then import to the Nuvi?
Does this problem only affect the Nuvi line (so if I were so inclined to spend $500+ for a Zumo, I'd be free of this?)

Is there something else I'm missing?
