BigDog/Dingweed: Winging It To Alaska
Wow---7,000 miles on our Yamaha WR250R's from the US/Can border all the way to Deadhorse, Alaska. Last year me and my buddy Scott Stevenson (Arizona) rode the same 2 bikes from the Mexico border all the way to the Canada border
mostly on dirt up thru Arizona, Utah and Idaho--with a little Washinton, Oregon, Montana and Wyoming thrown in
for good measure.
What a ride it was for us-----but what is this "winging it" thing ???????
Winging it----you can look it up but this will save you the time.
1. No daily destination
2. No real final destination either.
3. No planes to catch
4. No return date
5. No exact route to stick to or follow
6. No reservations were made for anything
7. No places to eat planned
8. No places to get gas planned
9. No watch----this one caused us problems, because we would wake up in our tents
and had no idea how long we had slept-----3 hrs.??? 12 hrs. we didn't know. So sometimes
we did drag it out from the bottom of our saddlebags and looked. And when we got way North it
never got dark----yeh, that was weird. So none of this start riding when the sun comes up--and quit before it
goes down stuff.
We had food to last for a week as long as we had water---so I brought a water purifier to guarantee water.
Believe me--there is much water in BC, the Yukon and Alaska.
But------we had to surface for gas---but carried some which let us never take a turn we didn't want to
because we didn't have enough gas.
Here's a little intro video ---------- as soon as we crossed the border into Midway BC---there was the
old Kettle Valley Railroad bed.
Mark: "Hey Scott--you want to jump on the railroad bed and check it out"
Scott: "Does it go North" ????
Mark: "Well-------Not really"
And off we went-----dumber than 2 dirt clods.
Sorry for the bad "Bear Grylls" imitation--I don't know what came over me.
For now I'll let you guess how on our first night----me and Scott (and our bikes) ended up on the wooden dance floor of a bar for the night.
We closed the place down---and to further confuse you --the place was closed and me and Scott neither one drink.

Ha, reminds me of one spring break in college where a friend who had no money decided to rid his house of clocks and spend the week on "Francis Standard Time". He slept when he was tired, and each time he woke up, he'd set his one watch to 8AM and carry through the day like that.
A few days in it was pretty funny seeing him all screwed up, taking his "morning" jog at 7PM, partying hard at 3PM one day, 5AM the next, having a "midday" porn movie matinee at 1AM.
Can't wait to read this!

I'm in. Hoping to see lots of route maps. And pictures.
