Stuffed with heavy tools, I'd bet a hard day of single track would snap that off in a hurry. Maybe if the mounting points were more centralized. Even so, the small subframe mounting tabs can only take so much before they go south.

looks that way - best to let the owner say what he did and how it has held up to what kind of riding he has done. it does look like it could use another mounting point near the cap to stabilize it.

Thanks for posting those pictures Meat Pop. If you notice the bracket that I used is a piece of aluminum. It is about 6 in. by 2 in.. Originally it was just a flat piece but I soon realized that it was going to hit the rear tire. I then cut a slit in it and bent it out to clear the tire. I also used 1/4 in. bolts to secure the tube to the bracket and siliconed the bolts to keep them water tight. It was nearly impossible to hold the nut on the inside of the tube so my wife (with tiny hands) held it for me. If I had to do it again I would use a shorter piece of aluminum. IMO the weak link are the brackets that are welded to the subframe.

I ride single track with a lot of woop-de-doos and since I weigh 240 pounds my back tire will bottom out. In Michigan we have 1300 miles of marked trails just in lower portion. (Lots of single track)
As long as you make sure that you clear the back tire you should be fine. You will be surprised how far you can bend out the bracket. The plastic panel on the bike will flex outward to accomidate the tube to clear the back tire. I carry tire irons and other long objects in my case. They probably don't weigh five pounds total. I would carry all my tools in this tube if I could but the factory tee handle allen wrench will not fit into this tube. It is about 1/4 inch too wide. Bummer. I have the pelican case for that tool roll and my electric hand held compressor.
Also notice that I have a flat sided welding tube (or octagon shaped). They also sell round welding tubes but I liked the octagon sided one the best.
This has been on my bike for a year now. Maybe 150 miles of it has been trail riding (single track).

Update 11-21-07 10,000 miles and still holding up great.

Erm...may seem obvious, but some other options for tool storage:

1. A tail rack bag - I have a Touratech one that straps very securely (so securely it takes me 5 minsutes to remove it...) to the small luggage rack (if you have one).

2. A tail bag that fits to your rear fender (KTM sell one) - if you don't have the small luggage rack.

3. An engine guard mounted tool box like the one from SW-Motech (available from Sommer).

4. A Cycoactive fender bag - used one of these with success on my LC4-E on long (trans-Sahara) tracks - but it partially obscured the headlight beam.

5. A Cycoactive glovebox - probably won't fit an Adventure - anyone used one on their LC4-E/SXC/RXC?

and maybe an additional one further back to stabilize the weight better and backup the weak weld on tabs that support it now.

You've got a stress riser where you slit the aluminum. Drill a hole there, so it won't break "on the dotted line."

If it were mine, I would get some kind of webbing for a secondary support and wrap it around your welding rod tube and the subframe, binding it with another pop rivet. DON'T use a surf leash!!

Looks like a good concept.

Hey Rapiti, congrats on your 1000th post.

Yes you are right it is a stress riser. If it was filled with cement I would probably drill it. The plate is 1/8 inch thick. It is way over engineered for my application but the plate is just some extra stock that was laying around and it was easy to work with.

Just to update everyone. The toolbox has 3000 miles on it now. I have had no problems. I did paint it orange with that Krylon fusion spray paint. They make an orange that is a perfect match. See it in action here:
