Some people get off on that second consequence.
Yes, I'm babysitting too. My daughter's watching Tin Tin and I'm planning my trip to Namibia and Botswana. I've got the rough map sorted. Now I just have to refine it and keep it to 14 days. |

Anyway, went for a blast down to Portland today on the DR.....easier to park than the Disco. Couldn't get what I went for so went to Bahloo Cafe.......best coffee/muffins in Portland........went to XR's place to say G'day, patted his two "viscous" dogs seeing as no-one appeared to be home...........trusting sole in Portland with garage open and all. Now I'm at home trying to get a head start on the chores for tomorrow so not busting a nut to be ready for family on Sunday.

Ok...so now the old girl is inside out of the sun and the heat, I have started pulling her apart. Got the covers off and then the seat. Started by draining the fuel. Pulled the line off at the carb (well I think it is) - you can see where I undid the clamp.
![]() Is the inline filter normal? It doesn't appear to be restricting fuel flow. Next I went looking for the air hose coming out of the fuel tank under the seat as described by Gags??. Is this what I was looking for? ![]() While we are talking air....it looks as if the airbox has had a hole saw applied to it.... ![]() I've also removed the airfilter and given it a good bath in some water and detergent. It's currently drying outside and once done I will bath it in oil and put it back together again. So I then went looking for the spark plugs. Finally found them and pulled the leads and this is what I found ![]() The lead is damaged and I am certain would have to be arcing as you can see the internal metal structure in the lead. Am I able to change the leads easily? Do I need to work out how to get the tank off to do it? Anything I may have missed here? Cheers Pete

good work so far
The fuel filter is not standard but it is a common addition. They only cost a few bucks so maybe just replace it at your convenience.
That is the hose/filter to which I was referring and I think it actually vents to the carby with further thought. From the photo it looks clean but I'm sure you have checked. I actually use a dedicated foam element cleaning solution for my filters but each to his own. When you re-oil, you will need to get proper foam filter oil; very tacky stuff and you don't need much. I either use rubber gloves and work it in or put the filter and a little oil in a plastic bag and do the same.......if it is too wet it will choke your engine. As you have an extra hole in you airbox, I would suggest someone has played around with your carby. You are going to need to find out what jets and/or clip position is on the needle. I am no expert with these and every DR will tune differently so might be best to get someone else to look at that if you are not sure what you are doing. Those leads do look a bit average so if in doubt, replace is my thought. Probably worth doing a full service on the bike, change everything then you know it's done........that has always been my practice when buying 2nd hand.

Hey Jugglingogre, you're doing a great job there, just a couple of things to look out for.
(1) Gags is right, throw the in-line filter away and replace it - they don't last forever and are cheap to buy. (2) While you've got the carby exposed, take the fuel hose off the carby inlet and make sure that the factory fitted crappy little filter inside the inlet pipe has also been thrown away. That little item has caused many headaches for DR riders. It's white, and you might need a pin to get it out. It will be easily seen if it's still present. (3) The carby vent (or second air filter) needs to be cared for just like the primary one. It only needs what you've done to it + a little oil. (4) It looks like the spark plug lead has come adrift in the past and been damaged in the process. As there are two plugs it will still run so it often goes unnoticed for a while. Do youself a favour and take the tank off, blow out any crud around the plugs, remove them and replace them with new ones (.075 gap). The lead should be alright, just make sure it has a firm grip when you put it back on the new plug. Maybe even wrap some electrical tape around it several times to insulate it. If in doubt get it changed. I did exactly that to a mate's DR three years ago and it hasn't missed a beat since. That tank will only need the two bolts at the back of it removed (near secondary air filter) and slip it out forwards. If fuel lines are still undone then there will be no further resistance. Great bikes and very easy to work on at home. PM me anytime. cheers I miss mine..... ![]() EDIT: I've just read over your previous posts about the problem you're experiencing. I will be very surprised if it's not the little white fuel filter or the plugs.....both are common causes of what you describe. I've PM'd my mobile, ring me if you want to discuss. I'm not a mechanic's backside, but I've done all my own work on these things. Your air box is just another way of opening it up, I'd be surprised if you have anything other than stock jetting as the muffler is stock and can't get any more air/fuel out quicker than it already can.

Seller's remorse
DrTrev your advice about that extra fuel filter is spot on. I first read about it on Nathan and Elana's ride report. A good read froma Kiwi riding around OZ. He described similar symptoms as J-o's bike. I did a stupid thing once on my XR250. During a service I clipped the gas cap vent to my map holder clamp. The next ride I had it conking out every 2 km. I checked everything, only to realize that I had crimped the vent hose. Instant correction once the fuel flow was restored.
GagsD2 I was at work this morning fixing pre X-mas dental damage. Luckily I don't have to use my feet to work. You only saw 2 of my dogs today. The vicious one is around the back and we only let him out at night. My wife is hoping that someone will steal all my bikes and leaves the shed open. It hasn't dawned on her that all her snow ski gear will go as well! DrTrev now that we are both Yamaha owners perhaps we should change our forum names? Nah too hard, and I still have an XL70 Honda somewhere on loan. I have been busy in the man cave cleaning up my WRF290 for sale. I think I will have seller's remorse too when it goes. J-O I use turpentine to clean my air filter, then hot water an dish washing detergent. AVOID THE USE OF PETROL TO CLEAN THE FOAM. and place a thin smear of grease on the fitting surface adjacent to the airbox when tyou replace it into position.. |

Thanks all. She is all back together and was a bitch to get started again. Once she warmed up she stayed going but even with choke on I had to start her with a bit of throttle. The inline filter had a big airbubble in it that I had to undo the fuel line again to get out as it was an airlock.
where is the carb fuel filter? is it actually in the metal pipe coming out of the carb that the fuel line plugs into? I'm going to head down to barryfrancis now and see if they have all the bits in stock. If they do I will take them with me when we go away or even try and get them all in tonight/tomorrow. Ok so shopping list: 2 x spark plugs 2 x plug leads 1 x air filter 1 x carb vent filter 1 x filter oil. 1 x inline fuel filter anything else? Cheers Pete

Just another thought....make sure that the venting pipes that hang down below the bike are cleared out. They also clog up and some stop air getting to the right places sometimes. Welding rod or length of straight wire will often do the trick.

![]() I was able to blow into this pipe and heard it percolating through the fuel tank. I went to the local suzi dealer and they had nothing I needed without order. The leads need to have the coil replaced supposedly to change them so that is also an order in. Anyhoo I've booked her in for a full checkup and replace all fluids etc early in the new year so hopefully that will get rid of all of the current issues at the same time. Now she just better behave herself while we are away in the Otways!

Go the your petcock and follow the fuel line passed the in-line filter until it meets the inlet to your carby. Take the fuel line off and inside the inlet, at that point, is where the stock filter is housed. The top of the filter will poke its head out of the inlet slightly but is a snug fit, that's where the pin comes into it. You will probably find that it's not there as over the years DR owners throw them away.
If that's the case, go to the plugs...they will, in all probability, be your culprits.

![]() ![]() ![]() Found these on another thread Pete, never seen a yelow one before....but that's it. Also read some posts about similar problems to yours and this filter or plugs have solved all of them. Good luck.

hmmm looking at a new air filter. Amazon has K&N for $35. Vince Strang has OEM for $70! Other american sites have OEM for around $30.
What's the consensus of the brains trust?
