Finally, a weekend of good riding and not just commuting to work in winter weather. Got out yesterday and today to ride PA back roads. Snow is melting and the roads are "fairly" decent. The dirt roads were a mix of dry dirt, mud, slime, slime over ice and rutty mud. Just had to slow down as you headed down into the hollers knowing it'd get rutted up and slick. The higher roads were pretty much dry. Never fell but I took it easy. Damn, nice to go out for a few hours and log some miles in for a change.

Friday night started out with the birth of my 2nd grandchild. Meet Emma Grace. Soon to become Scooter Chick #1 for the family.

Slime over ice...

Some Moran knocked the sign over even farther during the winter. Suits the road well...

Nothing runs like a Deere...

Slime, slush, ice and mud...who could ask for anything more;-)

DR getting her first bath of the winter. Waited for 1/2 hour for some moran in a Pathfinder to to scrub off every inch of salt. Wanted to tell him it'd be covered again tomorrow but refrained and waited patiently. I left a minute or so on the meter for the Civic behind me and she rinsed her car with my coin. Now that's the way you wash a car this time of year. No, she didn't reimburse me for the time I left her, didn't even offer to come over and cook me dinner. But I didn't hold her hostage like the Pathfinder compulsive washer dude. The bike was happy to have some salt removed.

Let me know when you get here and we'll take a ride together. There's a ton of good roads around here to travel. Do you know the area?

Honkeycat, I think it's ironic that I'm going to Florida to visit my kids now and you're coming north to hit my roads. Where in Florida are you? I'm going there 3-4 times a year now. As I was riding today I was wondering if the slimy mud was similar to fine sand riding. Do you think it's similar?

You have a place to stay if you want. The Catskills are the best riding we have around here. I'm so glad it's in my back yard.

You missed a great ride. Nice not to have the heat plugged in for a change.
Just as I was heading back to paved roads I came up to a house with a little kid standing in the driveway, about 10 years old I'd guess. He was standing there waiting for me and giving me the ADV salute!

I gave it right back to him. Wish I could have gotten a pic.

After having a flat on the way to work in 11F temps I thought it would be nice to repost a "warm" pic or two.

Ahhhhhh, doesn't that feel nice.

I really enjoyed your ride report. I'll have to go explore some of your routes. I'm in the north eastern part of the state and enjoy riding in southern New York too, it's nice up there. I'd like to seek out more dirt roads.

Dusty. Most of the pics are in PA somewhere around Friendsville. You can get lost on dirt roads out there all day long. That's my go to choice of places to get lost. I'm starting to recognize the road names so I'll have to find new places to go soon.

Winter finally left here this past weekend. No kidding, it was in the 70's even hit the 80's. Unbelievable weather considering what we've had hanging here all winter. Took off on Saturday and left the house windows open! Headed down to PA for a dirt road ride hoping to end up somewhere interesting but it didn't really matter. The heated liner was home on the shelf, the winter gloves were there too as was the balaclava. Didn't wear the mesh gear but no electronic crap plugged in and I can't even begin to say how nice that felt.

I never know where I am on these roads but I'm getting to know the road names. Decided I needed to head to LeRaysville. My grandparents lived in Stevensville, just south of there and my mother was raised in this area. I visit the area often but never really know how to get there on dirt roads...it's hit or miss. The LeRaysville Market is a gem to say the least. Not sure but I think it's Amish owned.

I quit smoking July 1st last summer and my first stop after quitting was that store for Wasabi peas. Cheaper than dirt ($1.50 a container) and add in a very tender roast beef sammich...we're talking $5 for all the loot in this pic.

Do not...I repeat DO NOT pass by this store without grabbing snacks and lunch. Best place to eat in all of PA as far as I'm concerned.

Time to update I guess.

I have been lax on taking pics lately. Seems I'm riding more and shooting less. I think that's a good thing but I want to keep this thread alive.

Today I had packed my camping gear and headed to the Catskills to find dirt roads. I really haven't ridden much dirt there and know it exists. Left home around 8am and hit the the first dirt road near Walton out by the Rainbow Lodge (no, it's not a gay lodge, they have rainbow trout in the pond out front). The road took me almost to Hancock where I hit 30 and found great roads dirt and paved out to Margrettesville. From there I hit 28 and 212 to Woodstock hoping to find some more good dirt roads but that didn't happen. I'd really planned on camping out in some primitive site in the eastern Catskills but by early afternoon I was heading west again...so what do you do...head south and hope to find dirt roads heading west somewhere along the way.

What I found out is there are no dirt roads heading west off Rt 47 to Liberty. It's a great road though and there's good stuff in Liberty.

This is the Paramount Hotel just outside of Parkville.

Just this Friday I got caught up reading about the old resorts in the Catskills. They've always held my interest so ending up in Liberty was a real blessing and again the road there did not suck at all. I even got to ride in gravel for awhile. When you reach the end of the road you get this...

Here's the first ruin I found. Small in comparison to Grossingers and the other one but just as important to those that left the city to escape the heat and teach their kids how to "dirty dance" in upstate NY

I'm guessing this is where the poor Jewish families went.

Soupy Sails?

Then I got to the "fancy" place where the rich folks visited. It must have had 200 rooms and a pond at least an 1/8 of an acre HUGE. What these city folk found "charming" is beyond my comprehension. The "Cement Pond"

Inside/Out?

Do not fuck with the rules!!!
