Borscht Belt revisited

Decided to take another tour of the defunct Borcht Belt in the Catskills again today. Many of the old resorts are now owned and being used by the Hasidic Jews. I'm not sure how many I found inhabited by that clan but I'm guessing 8-9 probably.

Bethel, NY (Home of Woodstock)

Across from Swan Lake, south of Liberty. For sale!

{S

This one is in Monticello, not far from the casino.

Damascus, NY. If you pass Howdy Dudie sitting on a rocket and don't stop for a photo you're doing it wrong...

and his buddy Pee Wee...

East of Monticello, across from White Lake, also for sale...

Also in Bethel, not for sale...

PS: I still ride the DR daily so more dirt travel to come but I wanted to share what I'm seeing on paved roads along the way.
371 in PA was vacant of traffic all day and the few cars I came up on pulled over to let me go thru at speed and from Damascus to Dimock was clear sailing, fantastic roads and a blast on the big Tiger. I highly recommend this road.

Detroit

I know, this isn't dirt farming and it's not NY/PA. Too lazy to start a RR so I'm gonna post pics from this weeks ride in Michigan here. Iffin you don't like that don't look.

Met up with some Michigan ADV guys yesterday morning for a tour of Detroit. Really appreciated having backup and someone that knew the area to show me around.

My backup crew on top of the Packard plant.

Unfortunately a bunch of photos were lost from the afternoon. The mode switch was in the wrong position.

More of the Packard plant.

Apparently some gang didn't like the Vagina Gang and thought they were Vag's ?

Partners in crime.

Notice the sign on the hut...

Then off to the Heidelberg Project...

That's it for now, heading north to the UP.

I slabbed it all the way up to the UP, didn't look like there was much to see anyhow unless I wanted to take 2 days getting up here and riding the coastline. The slab went quick. Camping on Lake Huron, waterfront site w/elec & water ($15!!!) Rode through Flint, wasn't impressed...it's no Detroit. Speaking of Detroit, I got a pretty good vibe about the place and hope it recovers. It seems like a cool city.
Flint wasn't really much worse than Binghamton, at least the parts of it that I saw.
No pics taken today.

Michigan reminds me of Florida rotated 180 degrees. The roads are every bit as straight until you get to the extreme north.

No offense to you MI folks

Hey Ride, great pics! Don't know how I missed this. Interesting shots of Detroit. Then you made it to the UP in a hurry! On the way back, if you have time, try to ride some of the M22 on the west side of the state. Great road. And if you happen to be in the little town of Frankfort they have a killer pulled pork and fries platter at bar on main street called Dingy's.

Yes, Michigan and Florida. I have lived in both. Michigan's the mitten. Florida looks like a ummm... an appendage.
But northwest Michigan has some good roads. The UP is pretty nice too if you can escape the skeeters and black flies at certain times. Have fun. Ride safe. Moe pics please.

In the UP now Dave, crossed the bridge this evening. Tomorrow is the UP ride and Weds looks like rain most of the day so I'll be holing up in a motel then heading home on Thurs.

Here's a few pre-Detroit ride Sunday pics taken from Canada.

The last one being the most appropriate

Thanks for the tip.

Not all that many pics today from the road but my campsite kicks ass so I'm posting a few in chill mode.

Cool old and rare Jeep. It was used at a fire tower in SC somewhere. Breakfast at McDs uploading pics.

Decided to ride through Flint but this was the only pic. Really not as bad as I expected but I only saw the northern side of town...

After crossing into the UP...

Awesome campsite...

front yard!

room with a view!

Ahhhhh

Love them old FC150s.

Stop at Bessie's for some Pasties just east of the upper end of the Mack bridge. We enjoyed them back in 2010 when we stopped there.

That's right down the street from where I'm holed up for the next two days. I'll check it out.
Big storm coming in tomorrow so I'm laying low and letting the bike take a rest. There's a bar across the street with 3 Ducatis in front, think I'll head over.

UP circle tour

Packed up and was on the road by 8:30 this morning, planning to ride around and see what the UP was about. Ended up right back where I started after doing around 300 miles. Planned on staying close to the northern border crossing but there's a casino up there and it sucked and the prices for rooms were way too high. I'd seen good deals right on Huron near the bridge so decided to go back there, that added a few miles. Anyhow, found a great little motel with a water view for $39! Staying here two nights until the storm blows by tomorrow.

Looking for Pasti's this morning...

Nope...no pastis in there. Might make a good retirement home though.

Required pic of a lake. They all look the same really....

and an even more boring pic of a lighthouse...

that's really not why I'm here. I've seen these things before. I sail so love being on the water but you only need one pic of a lake and one of a lighthouse.

And my sweetheart of a deal Notell Motel. I'm the only one staying here.

So I'm sitting tight til Thurs as there's big weather heading this way tomorrow. Should be cool to watch on the lake. Very tempted to head back to the northern border and take 17 down to NY. It's about 100 miles farther than the southern route and a few hours longer but I haven't been there and I'll probably go home that way. If you've ridden that route chime in and let me know if it's worth taking. Looks very rural and I think it's gonna get my pick when Thurs morning rolls around.
The UP and Michigan thing...I have a few thoughts about it. I could only ride along the lake for about an hour this morning before getting bored. I'd planned on heading north anyhow so picked a paved road and went north. There is really NOTHING out here. Beautiful road and I could ride as fast as I cared because there was nothing to run into. I liked it out in the woods. Straight roads but they were all mine and it was peaceful. No chance of finding pastis out there and I was hungry. Went up to the falls, didn't go in cuz they wanted money to see waterfalls...where I'm from we get to see waterfalls everywhere for free. So I passed on that. Headed towards Sault Set Marie where I'd planned on staying and found a great scenic road running along the lake. Again, no one on it so I rode it like I stole it. Very nice.
The tourist crap sucks, does everywhere and I avoid it at all costs. It's all over here but once you get off the beaten path it's pretty cool. Not the best riding and every trail I saw off the paved roads (there are tons of them) made me wish I was on the DR.
The riding on this trip has been questionable. Michigan is not really a riders paradise I guess. Dual sport maybe, probably. The northern part of the mainland is pretty, I'm sure it's awesome dirt riding and hunting/fishing. On a street bike just take 75 north. It's pretty and fast. I really couldn't justify spending two days riding along the lake (they all look the same but I think I'm repeating myself). Amazing how nicely kept up the roads are considering the weather.

This town is pretty but no one is here. The people that are here are old and hell and excited to be eating ice cream cones by the water. If I were to yell out my window right now (9pm) I'd wake a few of them up I'm sure. I'm cool crashing here for a few days I guess. They give 20% discounts at one motel for being over 50! I should have checked that one out.

Just took this of Motel Hell o...

Think I'll go see what I can shoot down by the water.

I got some flack when I posted on the trip planning area about wanting to go into a ruined area to take pics and see whats going on in D. I can understand that. There are tour buses going through ruined neighborhoods where the survivors are trying to hold on to what they have as the homes around them become crack houses. I didn't photograph any of those areas as we rode through, it just didn't seem right. I also didn't shoot those areas of Flint that I saw. I wanted to just for the impact it would make but its wrong when the house next to the burned out house has a family living in it. At the Heidelberg Project they ask that you don't photograph the residents, fair enough. The little girl that talked to me there was very nice and curious about my camel back. She was picking up trash and keeping the street clean. I loved talking to her and wanted to take her pic. This is what Detroit is about I think, allowing them to remake the city without making a big deal of it. I hope that's the answer. I think that little girl is going to be ok.

Since I don't have anything new to add let's have a few more D pics...

I love this pic but there are so many things wrong with it I don't know where to start.

From the Windsor side...

Maybe it deserves to be as dark as its painted.

Nice having a day off mid trip. Laying around watching TV. All day South Park on Comedy channel and it looks like all the bugs are just about washed off the bike.
