Wink Swamp: The Quest for Entelecheia and The Making of "The American Flesh Eater" Route

The Quest for Entelecheia and the Making of "The American Flesh Eater"

__-__the part where you: A. keep reading or B. skip to the pictures__-_

Ive had some time away from the bikes lately.. which for me , usually results in a lot of time planning for a lot of time to be had on a bike. .

Baja Mexico

Costa Rica

So, I sat down in the garage one night smoking a memorably potent strain of cheeba, pacing between the bikes, rubber and motor related memories and quickly began to dream up a month long, Solo, camping-from-the-bike, moto-quest. Thats right. A Quessst...

A quest that would run West to East starting in Sacramento California then terminating in Birmingham Alabama, specifically Hoover. Even more Specifically the Dam at Elvira Rd.

If you know me, you know that I cant stand riding someone else's route. it completely irritates me to be on someone else's schedule , following in their
wake, taking pictures of things that thousands of other people on motorcycles
have taken pictures of...
I've never really enjoyed playing other people's songs on my guitar.
I've always chosen to created my own.
Its the creative process that gets my rocks off.

I love planning rides. mapping and charting everything out. For me "It" is all about what goes under the tires and leaves a sharp ringing in the ears. To ride the pull and be covered in shit. everything else is coincidence and when in doubt do one of the following Five things:

Swamp's Five Universal Wu-Tangs
1. remember that your watch is always worth at least five dollars
2. sit in the shade
3. take hallucinogens
4. dig dirt out of the motor's cooling fins with a stick.
5. hike out

The only option was for me to make my own dirt route across America.

-_____*crack in shell, Fur showing, the sound emitted by bats*______-

I wanted this to be something new.
Something more challenging, more technical, more unforgiving than the TAT.
Something dangerous, but above all else an experience that would allow me to fine tune
the vital spark that initiates the momentum inside that eventually leads to the actualization of these dreams.
Yea, Deep squishy bog of eternal mystery stuff that only time alone with the bike in the boonieburbs can work out... (well that giant swamp turtle from The Neverending Story could also work it out.. but i dont have time for that.)

For the Record:

This is absolutely not the TAT.
I did not use any TAT information when making this route.
This Is NOT and has never been based on the TAT, does not seek to be like the TAT
Never will be the TAT

--__ digging out the tasty biscuits__-*

-3 months of planning , arranging , phone calls, late nights and early mornings

-digging through and highlighting paper maps, Gazetteers and other forms of cartography

-1,858 waypoints

-burning my eyes out viewing satellite imagery

-and 6000+ miles of hand drawn GPS tracks and routes later my plan was ready.

(Seriously this route really is a thing to behold and quite honestly scares the shit out of me).

"The Quest for Entelecheia"

The ride begins in California's Sierra Mountains, NW Eldorado National forest.
Then immediately crosses over the Rubicon Trail to Lake Tahoe then SE into
the Nevada Desert.

In short, this is not a Route for "The Large bikes" .
It is a route for small Dual Sport bikes with
Large gas tanks, low gearing, carrying minimal camping gear. The route is NOT
"hotel to hotel" or "town to town" as I want to Force the need to camp
as well as increase the possibility of incountering something.. atrocious ?

My main route is being used as a connector
for different riding areas that will be edited into the main route after completion of the ride.

I decided to give the route a warm, fuzzy name:

The route will be available as a GDB/GPX file after I finish the ride and get everything edited down.

This was the state of my bike "El Chupacabra" a couple months ago:

...and this was the state of Me a few months ago:

I pulled the motor out of this bike and put it in the Chupacabra:

"The Chup" (now one half XT one half TTR or.. XTTR )
back together and prepped for a month of mayhem,
solo-moto-vagabonding and unkept hippie dirt twirling.

Some of this stuff i have deleted from my gear list to save a few ounces.
not pictured is my bag of Oats.. damn good Oats .. damn good. mmm good.
No longer taking "the judge" (my pistol). Instead im taking a Gerber Silver Trident.
also not taking that green bottle filled with dog ass or that black box below the cup..
or that pile of clothes on the bottom left.. or the extra oil filter.

Im not taking any pictures of my riding equipment.
You will see that crap when i do the ride report.

The bike shipped on Friday (8/26/2011)

one chapter ends and another begins again

ill be back soon with a tales of sleeping Dragons, Soul Slingers, Skin Walkers and Garuda.

Definitely not "just another plain old TAT report". Swamp knows how to pick some excellent places to ride!

Wink The American Flesh Eater: Days 1 , 2 & 3

..............So I fly into Sacramento.

.. only slightly paranoid about the Visine eyedropper filled with LSD in my pocket.

i was wearing all of my moto-gear when i went through the metal detector in Birmingham.

i forgot to remove the 2 lithium AA batteries from the left zipper pocket on my Klim Baja pants. Metal detector has a shit fit.

black, bald, guy with blue gloves makes me take out everything.. including the Visine dropper (also in my left pocket). he points at the batteries and says "thats the problem".

-'phew' , that was a slight panic situation '

Land in Sacramento ________

My Cousin picks me up and we spend a good 2 hours searching for the warehouse ... more like the "Where_House ?" that contains the Chupacabra, my XTTR225.

Finally find the place down a tiny alley, back behind 3 other "Where_Houses? "

Then its back to 'Cous's place in the Sierras to drink , smoke , jam on guitars n' harmonicas , tend to the chickens... and the Crops.

Hell Yea

the 'cous

.. are ya' yella' ? well are ya ?

mmm...yes. very potent you will be. Strong with YOU is the force. ..mmm.

so now im thinking: " oh , Moses . Moses had an awesome beard and a red mexican blanket as his only clothing. i should do fiiiiiiNE in the wilderness. ive got a camel back"

Day 2 was spent getting hammered and shooting guns.

Day 3: The Rubicon.

Not sure exactly what i had in my head about The Rubicon. I knew that Jeep makes a "Rubicon" edition. i think i knew it came from the factory with lockers in it. I saw some pictures that didnt look too bad. " i mean come ON.. its like, 22 miles.. and jeeps can make it through ... psshhh C A K E... Ill just ride it solo WITH all my cross country gear." CAKE... cake. .. err mm..

so, i was thinking just a LITTLE too boldly :

It took me All Day to get through this pummeling of rocks and rocks and boulders and step ups and ledges and boulders and rocks.. did i mention boulders and step ups ??

i take lots of pictures which also added on an extra couple of hours.

... but i did make it through HA HAAA!!!

enough blah blah . on with the torture fest

these guys were looking at me as if i was out of my mind. i was beginning to think they may be correct. and yes.. that is the trail.

hello mr. ranger. nice doggy he he. good boy ..

see the skid plate ?

see the bike ?

big Rubicon Water Hole...

Im sure a lot of my woods riding buddies in Alabama are saying "dude why didnt you just cut through the woods and go around that shit ?" well, this is why. believe me i would've if i could've

It was a long day

by FAR. the most difficult section was going up Cadillac Hill. They named it that because it was "the best one". its very steep. sorry no pictures.. i was too busy suffering.

had to remove all the bags from my bike. there are these three massive boulders on the side of a mountain. yes. if i were to have fallen off i probably would have been killed or broken in tiny alabama pieces. believe me its hard.
i seriously had to teach myself the hard way how to ride like a trials rider.. a very bad one.

the bike kept falling on top of me and spilling gas all over the place.

fuck !

finally nearing the top. i see that a jeep is waiting to come down the god damn section. uhhhgggg. so i do the wheelie up the rock thing and again the bike falls on me upside down.

the jeep driver walks up to the top of the boulder and says " you need some help..?" uhhhggg..
me: ggg.. ehgg (he grabs the bike)

i puke in my helmet .
crawl to the top of the rock and onto flat ground where his girlfriend is standing.

tear my helmet off and puke on the ground at her feat.
she looks at me like she just saw jesus christ get hammered on the cross.

Me to the guy jeep driver: "eww.. oh fuck.. shit sorry i just puked in front of your girlfriend, thanks for the help".

i get out of there.
my foot shifter was bent so bad under my skid plate that i couldnt get out of first gear... not like i actually needed second.

so i stop when i see this stump.

remove my foot shifter and beat that fucker out straight with this rock.

now. all im thinking is . " must find good place to sleep and eat oats"

near lake Tahoe there is a state park named something like : Viking Schlome .. something like that.

I set up my hammock in there. looks like this:

i remember thinking: "man that moss is WILD! " then passing out.

im waiting on Rubicon Videos to upload to YOUBOOB "303 minutes left" ... so ill post those up tomorrow along with some others from breakfast the next morning etc...

Stay Tuned. lots more elephant poo and blasphemy to come !

Great pictures and awesome storytelling, subscribed!

I just got back from my first week jaunt on my XT in Vermont and this is truly inspiring, especially on a small bike: it only
cements my attitude that smaller is better, especially when it falls on you.

Only thing is....I can't tell what's more daring, your trip or you postin online of cheeba n 'cid

I was installing a hydrology station under a bridge in western Arkansas when I found one of your badges. I was like, " I am in the fucking middle of know where. This has got to be a dual-sporter." So I took a pic to see I could figure it out. This looks like one hell of a trip. Makes me want take my rides out of Arkansas.

Wink The American Flesh Eater: Day 4 Tahoe + NV

copied from Ride Journal:
"late start. fixed fuel leak. dripping from fuel line. fuel line slightly too big.

adjusted chain tension. fixed rear rack with zip ties. Listened to old man talk while i worked on bike. said he used to be a cartographer for the BLM. told me about a canadian couple who got lost in the nevada desert, ran out of gas. man died looking for help. somehow the woman was found. "

cooked big cup of oats.......

Behold ! SPORK-CAM!

leaving the campground there were lots of road bicyclists clad in their spandex "Look ! im part of the Peloton" get ups. one of them had run off the road and faceplanted into an embankment ....

i tried to feel some pity for the guy.. NOT !
hopefully he crapped his spandex

View of Lake Tahoe

"Carson City. Topped up with gas and filled up my spare MSR "just in-case" Bottle.

Jump on dirt road. claimed to be the old Pony Express Route."

and thats when i took the acid.

it was pretty strong. it came on within 20 minutes. i hadnt taken any in close to 9 years.

"big . vast. . boundless. deep , ruthless place of hot and cold. hard to wear the right stuff. either too hot or too damn cold. suffer a little through the whole day. never comfortable. the desert . nevada has the most beautiful shade of green. funny how a desert can have the most beautiful shade of green. i felt very much like a spec today"

the velcro on my knee guards was rubbing a hole in my skin behind my knee.
used a bandanna to cover the velcro, took my mind off it.

forever. desert. mountain. desert. mountain. East go East.

... i feel like a hamburger.

I follow my route into this "wash" / canyon area. there are some 4x4 tracks going every which a way in the sand. they branch off everywhere. i start free riding just going around checking things out. My GPS starts confusing me and i nearly forget how to work the thing. when i stop the pointer jumps and does a 90 turn . im used to this and know it always does it but it starts freaking me out.

i start seeing my own tracks .

i get off the bike and sit on the ground.

drink water out of the bag. think of that movie "Dune" and those desert suits they wore that would recycle their body fluids.

my nose starts running and it bothers me.
i feel dirty and my fingers dont work correctly.

i ride around some more and start seeing these things on all the hill tops in the area

why are they there ? are they radio controlled or something ? thats freaky.
shit. wooo.

i get scared and ditch the rest of the liquid in the desert near one of those big guns.

i end up getting lost and doing this giant moronic circle that makes me have to go all the way to a main highway just to make up time .

I conclude that every road sign in Nevada has AT LEAST ONE bullet hole in it:

its getting late in the day, my gas is low and ive just had a minor "episode" out in "the hills have eyes" land.

so i hit this place up..
apparently its name is "GAS"

or maybe its name was "BAR" ? not sure but it was one of those

then i have to jam like ToeJam to get to Berlin Icthiosaur State Park before dark.

I make it. free camping. under a shelter. .. es bueno
These fast moving , heavy, dark blue clouds moved just as the Sun set. Temp bombed , became cold and windy.
.. it started sleeting WTF ?? fell asleep after listening to the coyotes scream like little devil children.
