Great report, I'm definitely in.

Are you carrying a computer with you? If so, I'm curious how you packed it. If not, I'm curious how you're doing photo/video editing on the road.

Wink The Quest for Entelecheia

.

9 - 15 - 2011 Thursday

At 7:00 the green hammock gives birth to a smelly, 155lb, white, bearded man wearing grey undies

kind of chilly out here wearing wearing only underwear and the brown slippers.

cook my ADV Oats.

fixed my bark busters and cut off a piece of purple rubber from the left grip.
it was wearing a hole in my hand.. not a fix. more like revenge. bad dog.

my front sprocket is due to arrive at the Yamaha dealer (Motozoo) in St. George today. The plan is to ride into Arizona towards the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, head back into Utah to pick up the front sprocket then meander in a mostly Easterly direction towards Escalante and Kodachrome.

South into Arizona

I really didnt know what to expect. In my head I imagined that i would be riding into an area where i would see "the grand canyon". What i found was where the "Grand Canyon " begins. Then I was amazed.

And then I remember feeling extremely thankful that i was alive and capable of placing myself in a position to behold what the interaction between time and the elements had created.

into the wilderness .. again.

pear cactus

video:
there is a section that comes after i turn the camera off.. (of course) that is fairly difficult. there are large rocks, large ruts, step ups and the trail switch-backs up a mountain. you'll just have to believe me (which i know is not likely).

The Chupacabra was running perfecto after the jet swap at snow canyon.

I rode around for a while. there are some great trails back in that area. it gets wooded. tall trees , streams. The Colorado River can be accessed via a network of trails and dirt roads. nice place. I did a big loop (about 3 hours).

after picking up the front sprocket and placing it in my bag i decided to just ride until either
A: all the teeth fell off the sprocket
or
B: i arrived to wherever it was that i would be stopping for the night.

plan sorted . go.

Somewhere in UT...

also somewhere in UT. near Zion NP

looks like he used the paint he had left over from painting his bike to paint his van, or would that be the other way around ?

Grand Staircase Escalante Wilderness is now one of my favorite places in the USA.

it is seriously "WAF ... Wild As Fuck ". meaning you can easily get lost, die and have time for the maggots to have their fair share of your gooey-guts before anyone finds your carcass. The place is Huuuuge. it is 1.9 MILLION ACRES !

Copied from my travel journal:"The Real Ride Report"

The Native People survived off this land for a loooong time. They survived in the desert. that is so bad ass. ... makes me sick what we did to them.

we have people in America today that can only survive if they are given social welfare, "gub'ment" housing, a handicapped parking pass and the god damn EEOC.

We have become a fat, weak, sack-less, air-conditioned species that drive around in little air conditioned pods. .. im sure we will be harvested soon.

.....then it began to rain.

A lot.

Mud. Sand. Mud. Rock. Sand. Wetness. Dampness. Saturated. Chaffing. Fogging. Shivering. sucking water out of the hair on my upper lip..

the rain would continue for the rest of the day.

an invitation

I make it to Kodachrome.

Ranger wont let me in . tells me they are full until the end of October. wow.

so i ride into town.

find a small hotel near Cottonwood with a gas pump and a little convenience store.

conveniently they dont sell BEER OR CIGARETTES. The two things that
i was hoping that they had . convenient heh..

i meet a German guy on the way to my room.

i try to buy a couple smokes from him but he wont take my money.

the next morning i leave a can of Campbells Chunky Soup and a Root-beer on the hood of his car.

-----------------
next time:
lost in the escalante. the mesa luna? dinosaurs.
fixing stuff. hell's backbone. more offending comments.

I agree that the pics are great, but I can't tell what the real landscape is supposed to look like. Can you post the unprocessed pics of Arizona? They look like they would be beautiful without all the processing you do to them.

Very cool report. For some reason it reminds me of Les Stroud, Survivorman.
