Too bad its not them that has to absorb the results of their behavior.

Screw that. Yeah, some of the users can get annoying, but it's FAR safer in my eyes than sharing streets with cars & trucks. It's always puzzled me to see a cyclist using the road right next to a MUP - even an empty one. The thing can be clear for miles and the bike still uses the road . Different strokes I reckon.

When you're trying to move along at a decent clip, having to stop for every intersection gets old. Add to that EVERY intersection has a significantly increased risk associated with it, I'll take the cars. Here in the DC area, I'll put up with the MUT system we have to a certain point. ...but it IS less stressful for me than riding the MUT. Cars are somewhat predictable. Joggers, walkers, kids, dogs, etc aren't

...a step in the right direction...

Ah, but the beauty of MUPs is there aren't too many intersections. At least around here. They go under or over roads and provide access to them, but you don't have to negotiate intersections.

Google Washington and Old Dominion Trail. LOTS of intersections till you get west of Herndon. No over or under for most of the roads.

We surprised a Sheriff's deputy on today's ride. 1-lane dirt road and a cruiser comes around the corner! So two out of three of us dive for the other tire track and hug the right side of the road.

No car brakes were harmed in the situation, but we sure as shootin didn't expect A. a car and B. a deputy to be on that particular road. Goes from one nowhere to another nowhere with horse farms on either side.

The police here used to drive thier SUV's and cars on the trail, yes, it took up the entire trail.

I wonder what a high speed chase would have led to?

I have only seen them riding motorcycles on the trail lately.

I love how the phrase "different strokes" has become a euphemism for saying someone is a fucking idiot.

Seriously..trail or street? I'm picking the trail, UNLESS it is SO crowded that I can barely see down it. That has only happened to me once, and I ride on the most heavily used MUP in ABQ every weekend.

If the cyclist has had to deal with dogs thats
probably why they are in the street.
Even fluffy non vicious dogs wanna chase and bite.

Update.

Looks like the twit is denying all charges... Trial set for November 19th.

Quote:
Emma Way, 21, of Akrotiri Square, in Watton, is charged with careless driving, failing to stop after an accident, and failing to report an accident.
She had been due to appear at Norwich Magistrates Court today but did not attend.
During today’s hearing her solicitor Simon Nicholls entered not guilty pleas to all three charges on her behalf.
The alleged charges follow an incident in Rockland All Saints on Sunday, May 19, involving cyclist Toby Hockley.
A trial date has now been fixed for November 19 at Norwich Magistrates Court.

Do you support the same type of penalty for motorists who kill cyclists? The example above is the first one I've ever seen where a cyclist killed someone but there are hundreds if not thousands of incidents where cyclists were killed by drivers.

Money does not make up for killing someone.

-------------
It is not the vehicle .. its the rider/driver. I wonder how many he would have killed in a car/truck?

Why is it that we view killing by vehicle different than killing by other ways? I think they should be tried for manslaughter/murder same as other killers. Same thing for deaths at work.

Sure, but I've encountered precisely one aggressive dog on the MUPs...big gnarly german shepherd done up with spikes & shit. The owner didn't look very pleasant either. But at least it was on a leash. I can't say that for half the MUP users I encounter, but the dogs are typically distracted by the sweet overload of temporary freedom.

I've been chased plenty, but usually near homes - which are on roads.

On a side note, people should walk their cats more often - on leashes. I'm sure that'd be pretty swell.

On the motorcycle I head straight for the dog.. and chase them back into their home. Strangely when I told my neighbors after moving here (house warming party) the 'stray' dogs have been restrained... at least in my street. For the dogs I've managed to chase this way .. well they have never chased me again. Looked yes, chased no.

Does not work so well on the bicycle .. they run faster than I can pedal

That's when a good squirt in the face from the water bottle comes in handy.
