first video, ride for safety and fun; they are lucky only one of them got hit. biking for fun and safety with just a few riders and then using a complete road, disregarding red lights, plain stupid.

second video is really amazing, how could they organize a race like that. using one street for both ways. letting a woman stand in the middle of the road without visible clothing and flags and any protection, who is waving in such a way the bikers are not able to see it.
mayor fault in the organization, if you cannot organize a safe race, then don't.

how ignorant the sheriff is walking to provide some "aid". no situational awareness, no attention to his own safety and at last jumping in the air when bikers pass him.
unbelievable stupid organization

While I never want to see anyone get hit, that's what happens when you show a complete disregard for lights and other traffic controls. As a cyclist, those are the kind of rides I would *never* ride with or show any association.

Perception is a problem

My 2 cents is that nearly everyone perceives they are more important than anyone else. 'I'm late for work, kids soccer practice, etc. so I can speed, run red lights, whatever...' 'Well I'm training for a triathlon with my friends, so we can ride 3 abreast and take up half the road'... 'Well I'm a biker riding with my biker gang and we can ride 50mph in the fast lane cuz we're cooler than you'. We've all seen it. Maybe if we truly put ourselves in another person's shoes, we'd see how equally UNimportant we are outside our little circle. Perhaps the Golden Rule should apply. But since things seldom, if ever, change, I find the best times on 2 wheels or not, are as far from other people as I can get.

It already does. Those who have the gold make the rules...

So true. It's a damn shame those with the gold, seldom have the sense.

nice gimmick, but a person in a car is not able to see how many cyclist are in front of the cyclists he sees, so the potential side swipe will remain.
same goes for the speed indication, 17 or 22 or 25, pretty fast for some on the bike but still damn slow when you are in a car. i don't want to seem negative but trying to look on a iphone 30m in front of you, trying to read what it says, might be distracting in it self.

besides, that said, roads in scotland are a bit different as in the usa and i don't see how to prevent those horrific accidents that happen outside rural areas on straight roads with plenty of view and not that much traffic where giant trucks or cars deliberately try to pass with as little room as possible.
no consideration at all. as long as people with that kind of mind set are on the road, accidents will remain.

Since they're not 'accidental' they're more or less 'on purpose' let's call it what it is: a collision.

I agree about the size of the light, but its a nifty idea.

Maybe along with the numbers on the bike light we need to go retro on the red traffic lights and make them say stop, instead of simply lighting up.

If drivers and riders don't know by now what is implied by traffic, emergency vehicle, and rear vehicle lights I doubt that spelling it out will help, and maybe they shouldn't be on the road at all. In fact a 17 mph bike on a 55 mph road might just light up and antagonize some drivers.

If done on purpose its more like assault with a deadly weapon or attempted murder.

A cyclist was killed near my home. 4 lane road. Vehicle going the other way ... crossed to the wrong side of the road and hit near the curb.

Excuse? The 'driver' was stung by a bee.
