In regard to blasting cases, you could have it vapor blasted (dry ice) or soda blasted. Either one does not leave residue.

Anyone tried rice blasting? I've heard of it being used to clean up delicate parts/finishes. Might work for aluminium.

The o-rings are to prevent oil from creeping up/down the studs. The two studs at noon and 6 are exposed at the top, so oil can't get in there, so the rings are at the base.

The other four are beside the oil galleys to the rockers, and there's no gasket between the head and rocker carriers, so the o-rings keep the oil out.

The threads in the 12 bolt were particularly crusty and needed cleaning, as did the manifold bolts, etc. Just all crudded up.



That bolt is exposed to the elements. It doesn't seal out oil. It seals out water.

Once all 6 head bolts are in place the cap is placed on 12oclock. It keeps water from coming up into the rocker arm area.


To Arms!
With pushrod in place set the arm


Bronze washer and flat spring in place and drive the piston home





The 4mm bolt holds it altogether.



The rocker arm will come back out soon enough as none of the head bolts got set, much less torqued.
Tough to reach 2 and 10 under the arms!

Generator Bracket

I got adventurous today and modified the generator bracket as per Greg Benders' instructions...


Further comments regarding my welding skills will be ignored.

It had been broken and remangled long since.

The battery tray is/was a work of art.


I've added some extra strengthening.

The thing is bolted to the tranny, swingarm cross brace and rear fender. Add a tractor battery and this flimsy piece of sheetmetal is true overacheiver...!

Hey Dan, I think another reason forthe dowels is so the bearings dont spin. It is good to have a garunteed smaller amount of oil than a spun bearing and no oil, right?
