WA state considering privetizing ALL state parks.

A friend of mine, who happens to be a reporter mentioned the other day he was working on a piece about WA considering cutting all funding for state parks and privetizing them for self sustainment purposes. Here's the report:

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012...-funding-cuts/

I wonder how this would effect our riding areas if it should go through?

Seems like a good idea to me! We don't get to ride in state parks anyway. Seems like the people that use the parks should get to pay for it, not the rest of us that never go there.

One problem though - I bet they'd still keep the disco pass alive.

Aren't our NOVA funds being pilfered to help offset the funding challenges at the state parks? If so, if they privetize, the state won't need the those funds anymore and ths could be good thing for us. No?

Wait, we're still $2.5B in the hole. They're still fair game.

So now my Discover Pass proceeds will go to lining the pockets of a contractor?

I am sure the money won't make it out of Olympia.

Everytime I think Oregon is screwed up you guys out do us. Of course that is assuming we don't have to count Dr Repeat and his boy Scammy.

I'm sure you will get all that tax money back and they will quit taking it out of your paychecks.

The government is inefficient, they waste our money, I don't like to pay taxes, blah blah blah. Wait and see how you like it privatized.

Yeah. $27 per night at Lake Wenatchee State Park, but that includes a mint on your pillow every day (just hope the ranger knocks before entering your tent.)

Doubtful, because I am not aware of any state parks that have "riding areas" in them....
Well, one.... Riverside State Park / OHV area near Spokane.

Private= + quality ++++$$

Private= + quality ++++$$
USFS dispersed camping- no charge.
USFS sites- variable some as much as $24
NPS in MRNP $12
WA State Parks $21 plus $4 for a shower, similar in OR.
KOA Warrenton OR= $46 for the tiniest tent space fortunately good neighbors. I think the guy with a GoldWing and trailer camper a few spaces down paid $89 at KOA for the night
Heck, USFS here charges for $50 Enchantments Permit + fee, if you get in, for a night for the three of us to backpack into Stuart Lake for one night!. We spend more time camping on no-fee USFS with few people- it is an art to find these nice places.

In August and Sept I have moto-camped on WA, OR, USFS, NPS, KOA.

Best- Bethel Ridge (and other general USFS land)= free, great if one is self-contained for food, water, camp, and not afraid of using the bushes.

Camp on Bethel Ridge during my WABDR ride 08/12

Next, I enjoyed NPS White River in MRNP, $12. WA State $21 @ Scenic Beach plus $4 for the shower but nice to plug in to recharge electronic devices in the BR. Nehalem Bay OR, similar fees top WA, nice facilities and location but busy full in a nice way- lots of families and kids. KOA Warrenton OR $46 for the smallest tent space.

Yep, privatization of WA State Parks will bring well managed facilities at twice the cost.

Privatization will be bad for everyone except a few corporate fat cats. Amenities at camp sites may get better, but who gives a fuck? We go there to be in nature, there's plenty of hotels if you want luxury. The state budget will improve slightly, but you and I will never see the benefit of that. Services on former public land will get way more expensive, the land will be less well taken care of, and in the long run they'll start fucking it up (logging, mining, whatever they can do to wring money from the land, and they won't care if it destroys unique and beautiful landscapes for millions of people and for many generations ...)

The private sector is good for a few things, mostly related to generating money, but it has NEVER been successful at preserving things of beauty or planning for the next generation. We should keep its greedy fingers out of our forests. They're worth far more than the pittance our government would receive.
