A road worth riding

Thanks for the great photos (good for the economy as it makes me want to go back there).

Onion Creek RD

I set off to ride Onion Creek for the first time.

When gathering local intel from fellow campers I learned the La Sal Loop RD was under 6 inches of snow just 2 days ago.
Today was the first clear day. I set off wondering if I'll have to backtrack on Onion Creek RD as well.

The water crossings were fun! I stopped for a few pics, but blasted through most of them without even slowing. Fun!

This would be a good place to set the camera up to get watercrossing pics,
but because of the extremely late start, I'm feeling rushed today.

Onion Creek RD was fun and easy. I did meet oncoming traffic around a
couple corners that provided the warning to not have to much fun.

Next thing I know the watercrossing were over and...

I was riding up through a bizarre landscape similar in some ways to Titus Canyon in Death Valley.

Thanks Liberia. As impressive looking as the Shafer Switchbacks are, they are just an easy graded road. Most riders could do this section on a street bike. Just don't mess up a corner. Potash RD is probably too rocky in places for a street bike though.

Busted Plans

Due to the early winter storm, there were quite a few roads I wanted to explore for the first time that I was unable to.

Day 1

Smokey Mountain RD - Impassable due to mud and washouts
Cottonwood RD (Smokey Mtn Alternate) - Also Impassable
Hell's Backbone - Snow

Day 2

Cathedral Valley RD - Mud and river crossings likely impassable
Skyline RD - Snow

Day 3

Geyser Pass RD - Snow
Montezuma Canyon RD - No Time (Late Start)
Comb Wash RD - No Time (Late Start)

Day 4

Not as far down John's Canyon RD as I wanted...

Onion Creek RD eventually crosses this valley and I turn up the Onion Creek/Hideout Canyon RD.

Most of the time I was climbing, but there was one steep downhill.

This looked ominous...

...but was easily crossed. It was not as deep or slippery as it looks.

UP!

Up we climb!

The road seems to change surface types every 50 feet or so. I had a Scorpion rear tire on, but it was doing well enough.

On and on I ride,

with only the occasional quick stop for a pic while astride the bike.

The higher I go the cloudier and damper things become. Will I hit impassable snow?

Fall Colors Ahead!

Thanks
Dave

Awesome RR. It is hard to believe the sights we usually miss in a car. For now I can only dream of these places, but I am getting the bike put together and I think my wife even realizes that I am bound for far away places. Thanks for the pics and the report that keep our visions in place!
Best pics I've seen yet.

La Sals

Things start getting colorful...

So I finally stop for my first break on the 207 after riding from Onion Creek, Hideout Canyon, and Polar Mesa.

Fall Colors

Were a main objective of this trip

and I've finally found a little.

Down below is the terrain I've just traversed. The KTM wants more.

I only had a couple more turns before reaching the asphalt.
I'm delighted to see it's not snowed under.

Riding through this alpine environment...

...Another world can be spotted below.

I'm trying to hurry, but around every bend is...

...another reason to stop for pics.

La Sal to Henry Mountains

I Race...

Down...

The scenic La Sal Loop RD...

Barely...

Having Time...

to enjoy the scenery.

I wanna make it to John's Canyon before nightfall...

So a long asphalt ride is in order. There is no time left for the other stuff I had planned.

I stop for a photo of the Henry Mountains near Monticello.

The shadows are getting long...

I love being alone, racing across Southern Utah!
