+1 on the mountain bikes.

It's a good weekend ride from our area. I like to go through SW Oklahoma and visit the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Lake Tom Steed, and Lake Altus if time allows. If you ride into Texas on Hwy 62, you can slip down to the Caprock Canyons State Park, Quitaque (say Kitty-quay), and Turkey. Nice curvy roads with some elevation change. Then head towards Silverton and take 207 North. You be riding on table top flat ground then slip off into the canyon in a couple of places. Take a camera. If the light is right, you can get some pictures that very few people will believe when you tell them where they came from. From 207, you can slide over to Palo Duro.

Good roads, no traffic. Quite a few deer and a few HUGE hogs. The good thing is your sight lines are usually 10 miles long:)

If you want to avoid I40 coming home, you can take Hwy 60 through Pampa and continuing east through Canadian and Higgins. Once again, table top flat, then it's not.

My old stomping grounds. Lots of memories. Have a good time.

*edit* I just ran across this video promoting a bike race in the canyon. It's just a couple minutes long but gives you some idea of the terrain.http://www.24hoursinthecanyon.org/ne...on-promo-video

Uncle's Round The Bend 2012

Had a great time, well organized!

Put on about 700 road miles and 300 dirt miles. I think some of those trails in BB State Park marked for 4-Wheel Drive actually mean 4-Wheel Drive ATV's. Pretty narrow spots. Kind of like Cow Trails. Maybe an old Willys CJ would fit.

Recommend if you can get there next year, do so.

Many things blooming down there this time of year. We had beautiful weather.

DINO246: Good meeting you!

I'll be passing through El Paso in a few weeks on my way to California.

Any fun roads nearby?

Many years ago ('95), local friends took me on a ride over/thru the hills N of "downtown." Looking at the map, it was probably 375, the Woodrow Bean Transmountain Road, that runs through the Franklin Mountains State Park between US54 (Patriot Fwy) and I-10 but don't hold me to it. My recollection is that that was about it as far as fun roads went.

Not There yet

Wife is putting out feelers for a job in Odessa, never been there myself. been using google to try and see what is out there, not having a lot of luck. I could never understand places like Odessa and Midland, tons of land and they build everything right on top of each other.
I have a feeling I am going to miss the local pubs with the huge craft beer selections.
Also assume that camping is limited to the cooler months?

Any info is good, thanks

Abilene is only about 90 miles to the north of San Angelo, so your practically next door by Texas standards!
